I'm really not sure, I knew him well from childhood to just after High School but never heard a first hand account. I had heard that it was drug related but never really tried to find out for sure so that's not confirmed. I'm in Georgia now but if either of his parents or brother is still in Tampa, they may be able to shed some light if you want to make a couple of calls.
