There was this pretty, freckled girl with a warm smile in junior high, then even prettier and frecklier in high school. I could always make her laugh. She was a wonderful creative writer and a sweet soul. She lives so brightly in my memory that even the sorrowful news of her death cannot eclipse it. Oh, Donna. It is remarkable how a classmate we haven't seen in years can so forcefully rise in our consciousness when we're confronted with such news. I celebrate your beauty, inside and out, and drink a quiet toast to the pretty, freckled girl. Thank you, Donna.

I remember Donna from when I started going to Lutz Elementary in 5th grade. We had the dreaded Miss Haylock and then in 6th grade Donna was one of the only 8 girls in Mr Keoster's class with me. She remained a friend through out high school and then we lost touch. I'll miss her friendly smile and warm heart.

I was close friends with Donna at Buchanan (I think we met in one of Mr. Landry's history classes) and Chamberlain. She was my date to Bern's steakhouse the night before I left for the Army. She wrote to me during Basic Training, and I visited her once home on leave, and then lost track. Some years on, my late father bumped into her after he did a radio interview in Asheville, where she had moved. I tried looking her up a few times, to no avail. It was only recently that I'd learned of her name change and found her once again. Ironically, she had lived in St. Louis in the early '80s during a time I was living there also. We communicated some online, but I never got to see her again before ALS took her life. There are some photos here:

I knew Donna when we were at Chamberlain. She was a great person with a good soul. We lost contact after I joined the Navy after graduation. She would pick me up in the morning and drive us to school. I have nothing but good memories of Donna...
