Life since Aberdeen?
Moved to University of Manchester, Dept. of Zoology with Simon Guthrie when he was appointed to a Chair. Worked with him on Fish visual neurophysiology until he retired. During this time the Zoology Dept. was dissolved and we became incorporated in a new grouping of Physiological Sciences. At Manchester I became very involved in practical teaching - invertebrate and mammalian neuroscience - and also tutorial work -both academic and welfare. After Simon retired my teaching role increased and I became involved in Medical / Dental student physiology practical teaching and examining. My research was now extended to other fish research groups including behaviour of electric fish and neural control of kidney function in fish. My interest in designing and building electronic instrumentation mainly for neuroscience applications which started in Aberdeen eventually gave me opportunities to work for 3 periods in Zimbabwe for British Council and also in Borneo rain forest on tree root biomechanics!
I retired 5 years ago and moved to Chester having remarried. My new wife Barbara is a Dentist and shares my love of Classical music and particularly Opera. I still maintain links with a couple of research projects - one in Liverpool University and one in Manchester. In retirement I garden, cook, hillwalk, sing in a choir, tinker with wood, metal and electronics in my workshop and enjoy being a grandparent.
