Floyd Bostick Oaks, Sr., 86

ALAMOSA-Longtime Alamosa resident Floyd Bostick Oaks, Sr., 86, died July 17, 2011 at his home in Alamosa under hospice care.

Floyd was born in Paden, Mississippi to Grady and Willie Lee Dean Oaks on March 22, 1925. He married his high school sweetheart Roberta Inez Burns in Gunnison, Mississippi on March 7, 1947.

Floyd served as Sergeant in the 19th Troop Carrier Squadron of the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. He was a crew chief on a C-47 stationed in Hawaii and made several excursions to New Caledonia and New Zealand.

After the war he attended college in Mississippi, finishing his teaching degree at Adams State College and soon began teaching. He would teach math, chemistry, and physics at the Alamosa High School for the next 33 years.

Floyd loved to read and was truly a people person. He had a knack for keeping his students engaged with learning while teaching. He rarely knew a stranger and could make friends with just about anyone.

In his spare time he enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV, fishing, water sports, photography and tinkering in the garage. His favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren.

He also enjoyed time with his Army Buddies who called themselves "Six Hits and a Miss".

He is survived by his loving wife Inez Oaks of Alamosa; his children: Floyd Oaks, Jr. and Gerald Oaks of Alamosa; his grandchildren: Jared Oaks of Alamosa, Jessica Williams and Chad Oaks of Las Vegas, Nev., Amy Oaks and Eric Oaks of Alamosa; and great-grandchildren Cayden Williams of Las Vegas, Nev.; his brother Billy Jo Oaks of Indio, Calif.; his sister Marie Still of Colorado Springs; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents, three brothers: Milton Oaks, Harold Dean Oaks and Millard Oaks preceded him in death.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa. Inurnment will follow services in the First United Methodist Church Columbarium. Contributions are suggested to Hospice del Valle or to the Alzheimer's Foundation, in care of the funeral home office.
