Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Saturday, September 26, 2009 08:49 AM Anyone remember the fire at FH Elementary? I think it ruined the library...we had to be split up and bussed to other elementary schools. Good preparation for the FH high school fire. I can't remember what grade we were in when it happened. |

RE: Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Saturday, September 26, 2009 11:07 AM Robin, the fire @ Fort Hunt Elementary was in October of 1971...the day before or after my mothers birthday as I remember. Yeah we were all sent to either Waynewood, Stratford Landing and I think Hollin Hall or Hollin Meadows (too many years ago to be accurate). I remember playing in my back yard and saw the smoke, like kids of that age jumped on my bike and arrived with countless other children at the same time the fire engines responded. We were in third grade. Mr. Lacey was my teacher (if anyone cared). |

RE: Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Tuesday, October 6, 2009 11:26 AM I remember looking in the windows at the walls around the library (near the kickball field) and the plastic wall coating had melted and looked really wierd... I went to Stratford. Becky (Smith) Fredenburg |

RE: Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Friday, November 6, 2009 02:08 PM I remember that too. I also went to Stratford. Shortly after we were there they returned some items to us, one of which was a pencil box I had in my desk at the time of the fire. It had soot on it and smelled of smoke. Amazing the things that stay with you. So many excellent memeories there otherwise--I loved Mrs. Howerton, though Mrs. McGuire I could have done without! |

RE: Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Monday, November 16, 2009 05:22 PM Wow, I had completely forgotten about that fire. I was a student at Waynewood at the time. My only recollection was our teachers telling us to all be extra nice to the kids coming in, because of the trauma of their school burning down. I remember thinking you guys were like refugees coming in from a war zone or something, the way they put it to us. Turns out to have not been a big deal. I think we all got along great. |

RE: Fort Hunt Elementary Fire Posted Wednesday, January 27, 2010 12:14 AM Chris, I thought anyone who didn't go to Waynewood was a refugee, just a little subdivision humor......We were lucky, not everyone was blessed to go to the best elementary school in the world! Jimmy |
