I attended Roanoke College for one year before transferring to AU where I graduated in '73. Worked for a year before attending law school at William & Mary in '74. Also got married that summer Passed the bar exam in '77 and was offered a job in the Army Corps of Engineers General Counsel's office. While waiting for a security clearance, I was contacted by CIA. I said why not? If it didn't work out, I could hang out a shingle.
Twenty-five plus years later I retired after assignments around the globe. The family joined me in India (Madras & New Delhi), Frankfurt, and Cairo, Egypt. Cairo was far and away our most rewarding experience. My last job with the Agency was serving as the DCI's Rep in Los Angeles. That was a great job where we met shakers and movers in banking, construction, aerospace, and entertainment. I left the Agency in June '03 and started as the EVP of a tiny communications research company the next day. Over the next nine years we grew the company to 70 employees and had a significant impact in defense, intelligence, and West Wing programs.
We came to the attention of a spin-off of Lockheed Martin, The SI Organization which acquired our company in February 2012. I had equity so that was a good thing, but the transition of being President & CEO of a 70 person to being one of 20 SVPs in a company of 2,000 was pretty rugged. I resigned after 7 months and Toni and I moved to San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast in the heart of wine country (we have almost 400 wineries in the county). The Rhone varietals are outstanding. We live on ten acres with 20 mile views. We have a great guest suite so look us up if you're in the area!
Toni and I spend our time tending to the property, volunteering at the Estrella Warbirds Museum (www.ewarbirds.org), off-leash walks every morning with a 3 year old herding dog rescue (part mcnab, kelpie, shetland sheepdog, and whippet -- very high energy), and helping take care of our 3 year old granddaughter Roxie who lives on a 50 foot trawler berthed in Alameda with her parents Tim and Freda. And we try to get back to the DC area at least once every year or two to see our older son and his wife who are pursuing their musical careers there.
