Philip H. Gill, 70, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012.

He was born on April 16, 1941, in Cairo, Ill., the son of the late Herschel and Christine (Jamison) Gill.

He married Laura E. Foster on April 2, 1977, in East Alton, and she preceded him in death in 2003.

He owned and operated Land of Lincoln Carpet and Midwest Battery Warehouse in Wood River, and operated Gill Realty and Classic Decor. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by a son, Jacob Gill of Columbia, Ill.; a daughter, Sarah C. Gill of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Hershell, and wife, Vivian Gill, of Miami, Fla.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Gill.

In celebration of his life a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, with military rites being conducted by the Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Disabled American Veterans.

ROXANA - A longtime Wood River businessman was killed when his pickup truck crashed into an Illinois 255 bridge pillar on ice-covered Madison Avenue, authorities said Friday.

Phillip H. Gill, 70, owner of Land of Lincoln Carpet, 1477 E. Edwardsville Road, was killed Thursday night when he lost control of his truck while driving on Madison Avenue in Roxana during treacherous weather conditions. Gill lived in the 5300 block of Williams Street in Godfrey.
