Robert Eugene Naugle, owner and operator of Holiday Marine Sales and a retired employee of Laclede Steel, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Alton Memorial Hospital of complications from asthma. He was 61 and lived in Holiday Shores.

Mr. Naugle was born in Harrisburg, Ill., on Jan. 31, 1941, to Gerald and Helen R. Brooks. He was the middle of three siblings and was raised in the Alton area. His father was a schoolteacher, and his mother worked for the state of Illinois.

Mr. Naugle graduated from Alton High School and later started taking electrical and electronic courses at the old Bailey Technical School in St. Louis. He graduated in the early 1960s.

Mr. Naugle met June Ayres of Alton while they were attending high school. They married in 1962.

Mr. Naugle worked as an electrician for Laclede Steel in Alton for 17 years before retiring in 1977. In the mid-1970s, he started Holiday Marine Sales in Bethalto, a company that fixes and services boats. Mr. Naugle was owner and operator of the company until his health started failing. The company is still owned by the Naugle family.

"My husband was a workaholic, but he loved people and wanted people to have fun," said his wife. "His favorite saying was, 'You don't know if you like something until you've tried it.'"

Mr. Naugle enjoyed gardening, boats and the water.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Naugle is survived by a son, Clayton Naugle of Moro; a daughter, Sheri Ameduri of Holiday Shores; his mother, Helen Brooks of Alton; a sister, Linda Nevlin of Godfrey; a brother, Jerome Naugle of Queensland, Australia; and two grandchildren.
