SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2022

 

                                                                        

 

     First Presbyterian Church of Alton is blessed with the gift of being able to award scholarships to Alton Senior High and Marquette High School students.   The 2023 application period is now open!!!!

     Please carefully read the descriptions of all the scholarships below, then complete the appropriate application.  There is a link for the new applicant scholarship and a link to the renewal form below. Please print out the appropriate application and complete the form using either black or blue INK...do not use pencil since it can fade out or smudge.  You may also type out the information using word processing and turn in as an attachment with the application form. If you submit your application or renewal via email, please send it in PDF format. Fill out your contact information in its entirety i.e.; full address, email address and cell/home phone number.

     As with any assignment you receive in high school (and especially at the college entry level), do your own work as the committee wants your words, thoughts, hopes and dreams articulated in the short essays.  Read the questions carefully and provide thoughtful responses to fully answer the questions.

                                      SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA - PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION

        The criteria for each scholarship was written BY THE ENDOWMENT DONOR. The Scholarship Committee at First Presbyterian Church, follows those guidelines as set by the endowment to determine eligibility for each scholarship.  Each scholarship and its selection criteria are stated below. The criteria will not only determine the pool of candidates for each award, but clearly establishes the benchmarks for students in each scholarship.  It is up to the student to demonstrate in writing through the vehicle of short essays, their excellence in the individual selection qualifications for that scholarship. Obviously the students at this level of education should be articulate and demonstrate proper grammar and spelling. 

CRITERIA FOR THE JAY REED DELANO, JR & ROBERT B. LYNN, JR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Purpose:

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to needy and worthy students of the greater Alton area to assist them in their higher education following high school.

         Eligibility:

Any man or woman, irrespective of race or creed, who is of good character and who shall have graduated from high school in the upper 40% of his or her class shall be eligible for the grant.  Preference in selection shall be given to those who are not in the upper 10% of their graduating class.

        Selection:

Consideration shall be given to students who have also demonstrated leadership and acceptance of responsibility in school, church, or community activities.

         Nature of Grants:

Grants may be used for any purpose in the furthering of the recipients higher education.  The grant can be made to one or more persons each year, but no one person shall receive a grant in successive years without reapplication.  No person is eligible to receive a grant for more than four years.  The grant value for each scholarship will be dependent upon income generated by the funds each year.

 

CRITERIA FOR THE VIRGINIA J. STOOKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose:

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to graduates of Alton High School and Marquette Catholic High School to assist them in their higher education following high school.

         Eligibility:

  1. An applicant must be a graduate in good standing of Alton High School or Marquette Catholic High School.
  2. Applicants must rank within the top ten percent (10%) of their graduating class.
  3. Applicants who are members or children of members of First Presbyterian Church of Alton, Illinois will be given preference in the making of awards of the scholarship.
  4. If no applicant in a particular year is an attendee of First Presbyterian Church of Alton, Illinois, preference will be given to students with an interest in theater and/or music.
  5. Eligibility for the scholarship will be determined without regard for the income of the applicant or the applicant’s family.

         Selection:

Consideration shall be given to students who have also demonstrated leadership and acceptance of responsibility in school, church, or community activities.

        Nature of Grants:

CRITERIA FOR THE LORELLE WEBB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose:

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to graduating female students of Alton High School and Marquette Catholic High School to assist them in their higher education following high school.

Eligibility:

Graduating female students from Alton High School or Marquette Catholic High School are eligible to apply.

Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) or equivalent.

Selection:

Applicants shall have participated in some extracurricular activities and COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Consideration shall be given to students who have also demonstrated leadership and acceptance of responsibility in school, church, or community activities.

        Nature of Grants:

More than one scholarship may be awarded; however, no scholarship will be less than $500 per year. The grant can be made to one or more persons each year, but no one person shall receive a grant in successive years without reapplication. 

 

CRITERIA FOR THE FRANK K. WEBB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose:

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to graduating male students of Alton High School and Marquette Catholic High School to assist them in their higher education following high school.

Eligibility:

Graduating male students from Alton High School or Marquette Catholic High School are eligible to apply.

Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) or equivalent.

Selection:

Applicants shall have participated in some extracurricular activities and COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Consideration shall be given to students who have also demonstrated leadership and acceptance of responsibility in school, church, or community activities.
