Vernon D. "Butch" Kitzmiller, 67, of Brighton, died at 12:55 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at his home with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 13, 1942, in Alton. He was the son of Dora and Ralph Harris of Godfrey and the late Laverne Kitzmiller.

He married the former Nancy L. Howard Sept. 13, 1974, in Alton. She died July 16, 2009.

He was a manager for InterTek of St. Louis. He was a member of the Tri County Rod & Gun Club, National Rifle Association and the USGA.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ric and Sandy Kitzmiller of Maryville and Jeff Cairns of Kampsville; a daughter, Debbie Comereski of Brighton and her companion, Jeff Conroy; three grandchildren, Justin Comereski of California, Jamie Comereski of Brighton and Caitlin Cairns of Godfrey; and a brother and his wife, Robert and Marji Kitzmiller of Sterling, VA.

In addition to his wife and father, he was preceded in death by a son, Steve Cairns.

His wishes were to be cremated. No services were scheduled.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Targhetta & Wooldridge Funeral Home in Brighton were in charge of arrangements.

Now here was a funny guy. I remember he invited me to a dance when we were in West Junior. His parents picked us up and my Dad took us home. When Dad asked where he lived Vernon replied down skunk hollar and over goat hill. Oddly he had discribed the road perfectly. Miss you Vernon....
