Comments:

I have been married to my wonderful wife Lois since 1979. I am currently a Professor of Radiology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. I greatly enjoy teaching residents and fellows how to interpret ultrasound images and to do biopsies and abscess drainages using ultrasound or computed tomography to do the procedures effectively and hopefully safely. (I've been doing it for so long that I can say "in my experience..." and it might actually mean something to them.) I also enjoy doing research in diagnostic ultrasound and interventional cross-sectional radiology during work-time and doing research on late Roman coins ca. 300 AD and Anglo-Saxon coins ca. 750 AD (chiefly using metallurgical analyses and electron microscopy as well as comparative analyses) at night and on the weekends when I am not on call or working. I am also an avid cyclist where my type A personality takes over so that I exhaust myself trying to catch people ahead of me, and where my stupidity caused me to wreck several Februaries ago, breaking my hip, when I hit a patch of unexpected ice. I still enjoy working but am at 80% effort now which means I get 8 more weeks vacation than I used to. I have no idea when I will stop working - it is fun - and leave that to the Lord who I pray will let me know when I should quit.

School Story:

Sadly I did not really enjoy my high school time except for Chem-O and the rifle team, where I lettered but was kidded afterwards by the jocks for not being an "athlete". I was teased early and by high school was sure I was too fat and ugly to be appreciated by any girl. So I did not even appreciate opportunities open to me. Lois saved me in 1977 and has been my wonderful wife since 1979.

The 50th reunion turned out to be very enjoyable since I could re-acquaint myself with old friends, and now not being so self-conscious, could actually enjoy myself around those there.

I wish all of you the best and hope you believe in Christ so that I can see you all again some day.

Happy birthday! As opposed to last year, this year you are prime at 73, not divisible by anything. I have been 'retired' for 2 1/4 years now, but that means I only work on average a day a week (radiologists are interchangeable parts). I'm not ready to stop working altogether yet. Is John retired now?

I have forgotten you were on the rifle team also. I tell a similar story to people now. It's not the guns that are the problem, otherwise we could not have done what we did in school. Society has gone crazy instead, abetted by the media "hyping" gun violence.

I know your "lost" feellngs in high school, although mine happened at East Junior High in 7th grade. I was bewildered and severely intimidated by having to truck the hauls with giants and to make it to the next class in 6 minutes or whatever the passing period was.

Happy birthday! Respond you old bugger. My last two ‘happy birthdays’ fell on deaf ears.

I just read your school story. It was remarkably well-written. I hope you are enjoying retirement. I probably saw Eric when he was at UM, as I just retired from radiology there.
