TIGER ALUMNI: MAY 7, 2012 - Just learned from our group member Susan Friedrich Davis ('81) that our beloved former chemistry teacher, Dr. Peter Demmin (who taught at ACHS from '59 - '95), passed away today. Susan says that Dr. Demmin and his wife Ruth have been a huge part of her parents' life as her Dad (Woody Friedrich, our very popular retired ACHS math teacher) and Pete taught together for many years; the four of them enjoyed going to theater and dinner together for over 30 years! As Susan reminds us, our thoughts and prayers are with Ruth, Rick, and Jeff. Peter Demmin was a marvelous teacher & had a terrific sense of humor. He'll be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.

Steve Raikin (Greenfield) (1967)
Peter earned a University of Buffalo Bachelors Degree in Science, a Masters Degree in Chemistry, & an Ed.D. in Education. During his 36 years at Amherst High School (1959 - 1995) he taught Chemistry, served as the Stage Crew's Faculty Advisor, and co-authored two high school chemistry textbooks (published by Prentice Hall). Remarkably -- between 1986 and 1995 -- 4 of Peter's chemistry students were recognized as being among the top 4 high school Chemistry students in the Nation through their selection to the 4-person U.S. International Chemistry Olympiad Team. Last April, he was chosen by the Chemistry Olympiad to come to Washington, DC to help score the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. At the time of his death on May 7, 2012, Peter was still writing Chemistry questions for the New York State Regents Exam, and he was also conducting workshops for the College Board Institute at St. Johnsbury College in Vermont. Peter lived with his wife Ruth live in Amherst and also love to travel. At the June, 2011 Boomer Reunion, Peter was among the eight retired teachers awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and Gratitude by the the Amherst H.S. Classes of '63-'70.
