Mr. Hughes was a special teacher whom I remember fondly. I struggled in his class and consistently made a “D” on each of his exams and tests no matter how hard I worked. There were rarely any marks on the paper other than the grade circled in red at the top of the page. I believed he did not like me and was giving the poor grades just to hurt my average. After class one day I mustered the courage to confront him. I learned how badly I was really doing in his class. The “D” was a reward for my hard work, effort and class participation. Rather than hurt my average, Mr. Hughes was saving it. His kindness motivated me to work harder. Although I never mastered the subject, Mr. Hughes remains one of those teachers that made a real difference in a young student’s life. I wish there were more teachers like Mr. Hughes.
