Every time a classmate dies it saddens me and makes me even more awar of the sadness and grief that accompanies losing a loved one. What ever the personal connection is the loss leaves an unfilled space where that person should be. My heart goes out to Barry's family and all the others of us that had a personal connection. Barry was an iconic figure to many of us. My adolescence and the way I saw the world was shaped by his presence, his character, and his friendship. Thanks Barry, Tom Coffman

Barry was one of the few of us that started at Indian Ridge School on Cuba Street.  A little 4 room school house with kindergarten, 1-2, 3-4,5-6 classes.  I remember when we were in first grade, the second graders made up the first row near the door. I think there were 5 in second grade.  We probably had 12 in first grade.

There were many wonderful years at the Indian Ridge summer playground. Then West Elementary and double sessions in 6th grade. The junior high on Punchard Ave and then HS.  13 wonderful years together.

Barry was one of those "bigger" than life people.  With him and Tom Coffman playing tackle both ways was a wonderful sight to see.Two big bookend tackles on offence and defence.

I still remember setting up yearbook photos for the basketball team.  If you are reading this, go to your yearbook and take a look at Barry's picture.  He dunked this ball after jumping off a mini-tramp.  He had a ball. It was probably the first time he had ever jumped on a mini-tramp, and the last.

I was lucky to have lunch with Barry last summer and he had not changed a bit.

My heart-felt condolences to his family.

With much love,

Tom

I am so sorry to hear we lost Barry.  You always knew when he was coming down the hall:  larger than most and full of life.  He totally charmed my mother!  He will be missed by many people.  My condolences to his family.  Pam (Mcaninch) Mackesey
