We are moving in the right direction for the golf outing.

(2) more players and we have (4) foursomes.  That will be a good group.

If I get Tee times starting at 8am we should all be finished by around 1pm.  I don't know if that is enough time or not.  I don't mind trying to get earlier tee times if we want to try and get in on the photos.

It's hard to believe it's only a little more than two months until our 50th reunion!  As of tonight, 44 of our classmates and 21 guests have registered to attend.  That's starting to look like a good party, but there's room for many more.  I hope everyone who has registered is looking forward to the weekend, and I hope those of you who may still be on the fence or who just haven't gotten around to registering will commit to attending.  We need to make another interim payment to the Fairview Park Marriott at the beginning of May, and right now we're close but not quite up to the number of registrants we need to make the next payment.  So if you're inclined to come to the reunion, it would be greatly appreciated if you register to attend in the next couple of weeks.  Remember that you register through the "50th Reunion" link on the website.  You can pay by credit card ($160 per person for the Friday night mixer and Saturday night reception, $10 per person for the Saturday afternoon picnic at AHS), or you can indicate on your registration that you'll be paying by check.  If you pay by check, the price for the Friday night mixer and the Saturday night reception is reduced to $150 per person.  Because the website software won't let us set two different prices for the same event, you'll probably still get an invoice indicating that you owe $160 per person, but trust me, if you pay by check you get the reduced price.  If you're paying by check, after registering please send your check (payable to "Annandale High School 1971 50th Reunion") to Maureen Hamilton Hackert at 6162 River Sound Circle, Southport, NC 28461.  I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in June!

Hello Fellow Atoms:

I want to mention something to the Reunion Golf group.  There is an organized outing at AHS Saturday which will likely conflict with the golf outing.

About the only way we can resolve this is to set up very early tee times in order to finish early enough to get to AHS.  I don't know about you all, but I'm probably not that interested in partying into the evening on Friday night and getting up at 5:30 - 6:00am Saturday morning.

We want as many people as possible to participate in the golf outing, but the event at AHS is going to be very special also.  My gut feeling is if you want to be part of the AHS outing, you might not want to comit to the golf outing.  We "might" be able to get over there to catch the very end of the festivities, but it is questionable.

So please let me know if you want to opt out of the golf outing.  Right now we still need (2) more players to have (4) foursomes.  I am going to try and set us up at Twin Lakes Golf Course.  I know that was a popular course back in the late 60's and early 70's.

Looking forward to seeing everyone ... it's only about 2 months away.

Jim Burden  ( I have been getting messages to Jimmy Burden.  Haven't heard that in a while)

  • How thick was the sight and scent of cigarettes (or so I thought) wafting through the bathroom stalls before AHS established a smoking lounge for seniors?  How long did that privilege last or was it a very short-lived window in the history of Annandale High? I think it is a sure bet that our 2022 tour will not include such a sanctioned lounge in the age of safe and drug free schools.

Hi Folks:

It is pretty much determined that if you want to participate in the Golf Outing, then we will not be part of the AHS tour or photo at the stadium.  So if there are any golfers that want to be part of the AHS visit, please let me know so I can take you off of the list.

Time for me to "drop" some names.  I need the following people to please send me their Handicap Index, or or the typical score you shoot.  Casey will figure that stuff out.  We are going to have a little competition and will either add or reduce total scores from each group based upon the aggregate skill level.  Seems like the polite thing to do.

I need handicaps or average scores from the following people:

Scott Braxton, Jane Valentine, Fred Chandler, Tom Poole, Mike Guthrie, Casey Hustvedt, Debbie Silver, Gary Vassallo, and George Knox.

We are just a couple of months out now.  Looking forward to seeing everyone.

In case you haven't heard, our 50th High School Reunion Extravaganza is being held in less than 2 months!!! You certainly don't want to miss this opportunity to renew old friendships, establish new friendships, kiss your old flame, meet someone new (ask Greg Porter about that), or just plain party the night away!

Planning this event has been full of challenges, however we are becoming experts at this. We do need your help.  If you are going to attend, we need for you to register now!  We are required to pay for the entire event up front and we have one last very large deposit to make. Therefore, the deadline for registration is May16th.  This will help us in planning the event and making this a weekend you won't forget!  I know you have been checking out the website and want to attend, so please go ahead and register!   Please help us make Paul Peters' dream come true and have an excellent adventure!

  • Does anyone remember the “magic” of chemistry lab, the smoke, the flames, and the concoctions produced? Perhaps it would have seemed less like Harry Potter’s potions class if we actually understood the chemical reactions we were witnessing.

Hello AHS Golf Enthusiasts across the Fruited Plains:

I had a conservation with Twin Lakes golf course.  They typically do not like to take tee-time reservations more than 7 days out.  However, it appears that we having (4) foursomes would qualify as an "outing".  Made me feel a little special.

Since we have ruled out playing golf AND participating in the AHS photo op, I decided to make a request for (4) tee times starting at 10am, Saturday morning.  I did not see a reason to get everyone up at 6am to go play golf after a potentially late evening Friday night..  On a typical day a round takes about 4 hours, which means the last group would finish approximately 3pm.  Hopefully that will give us enough time to get back to the hotel, freshen up a little, and get ready for the Saturday evening activities.  Casey needs a little more time to get his hair just right, but it's worth it !!!

I am supposed to hear next week as to whether or not they will allow the 4 tee times in the "prime" Saturday morning time frame.  We will see.

So that is where we are at this moment.  STILL NEED A COUPLE OF ADDITIONAL GOLFERS TO FILL OUT THE FOURSOMES.  You don't have to be awesome, just willing to have fun.

If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Jim,

I apologize that I will not be able to make the reunion, including golf this June. I really appreciate all you've done to put this together and hope you or anyone coming to the SF Bay area look me up if they'd like to play at the Olympic Club.

Best.

Michael Hexner

Kent Hustvedt

I represent that comment, Jim.  But I have to disagree, if I wait till after the round of golf it will be way late too late to address my hair.  I spend the better part of an hour every year (including time in the barger shop chair) on my hair.  If that much.  What were you thinking?

Gregory Porter

This has nothing to do with our upcoming reunion. I just thought that you might like to see a picture of one of the calves on our farm. Just in case anyone is interested, the facial markings are due to the fact that he is an Angus/Hereford cross, commonly referred to as a "Black Baldy." I fully appreciate the fact that this knowledge will have very little practical application in your lives. On the other hand, it beats reading the news.

Thank you for the kind words Mike.

I dove in 1 event Friday and 2 events Saturday and felt fine.  2 golds and 1 silver.  Lost the 3rd event by a little under 1 point, but beat the guy earlier in the day.  All in all, OK.

Sunday morning, for some reason, I entered the tower event.  In springboard, the diving board flexes and catapults you up.  In tower, it's concrete ... everything is  muscle generated.  Apparently a little more than I expected.  Pulled "something" in my lower ab area.  Tried a couple more dives, but the pain did not go away.  So I withdrew from the final 3 events and judged the rest of the day.  2 National titles.  I'm OK with that.

Had a great time though.  We have a guy named John Deininger who is 84.  He did a 1 1/2 somersault with 1 twist from the 3m springboard.  NOW THAT IS IMPRESSIVE !!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in about a month.  It is going to be a great event.

As some of you may know  Jennie and I moved into a new house. Yesterday I was cleaning out the garage at the old hpouse. In the back corner I found an old desk, I opened a drawer and found a stack of photos that date range from 1980-1987. I thought I would share one of those photos today. It is a reminder of how important it is to visit classmates whenever you have a chance. This photo is from the 10 year reunion picnic.. Cameron Cookmeyer.

Thanks for [commenting George. It still hurts when I see pictures of Cameron. Greg, you are right that is Christie in the background. I think I was trying to get this picture when I took the one of Cameron.

Does anyone recognize the person in the blue shirt behind Christie?

Hello '71 Atoms   .....  Another golf update.

At this time we have 13 golfers.  I'm going to put a couple of people on the "spot":

Mike Guthrie.  It does look like we will not make the AHS photo/visit.  Do you still want to play golf?

Scott Braxton:

05/26/22 09:47 PM #112

James Burden

Let me try this again.  I hit the wrong button.  A little "Captain and Pepsi" has me a bit relaxed this evening.

Mike Guthrie:  We will miss the photo and AHS event if you play golf.  Please let me know what you would like to do.  Need your handicap.

Scott Braxton:  I need your handicap, if you have one.  If not, give me an idea of what score you typically shoot.

Fred Chandler:  You said you would let me know if you were going to play.  It's time to let me know.  I think it would be a wise decision to play ... because we want you there.  Need your handicap also if you play.

Casey:  No way to keep Casey off of the course.  But, "of course",  I need your handicap.  Clever ??

So at this moment we have(3) groupe of (3) and (1) Foursome.  It would really be nice to have (4) foursomes.  We need (3) more motivated individuals.

Did I mention that there will be trophies awarded at the banquet???  These will be multi-dollar pieces of wonderment.  Yeah, that's it, wonderment.  A true keepsake FOREVER !!!

We are playing the Lakes Course and Twin Lakes Golf Course.  I haven't played that since I was on the AHS Golf team ... of course so was Pam Swim who used to kick my butt on a daily basis.  Over the years, I have come to grips with that.  Probably why I took up diving.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.  Let's have some fun.

I guess I should start getting used to "Jimmy" again, because I'm pretty sure that is what I will be called at the reunion.
