I was so sorry to heard about Jim Reid. He was a friend to all that was in our class. He will be greatly missed. Praying for his sisters and family. R.I.P. JIM "JIMMY" REID.... Fly High My Classmate...
Jim was one of my oldest and best friends. We were friends from pre-school age through college but unfortunately lost touch when we went our seperate ways after that. Even so, I have often thought of him and wondered what he was up to. Others have spoken of what a nice and friendly person he was, and I well remember my mother saying (more than once) - "Jimmy is such a nice boy; why can't you be more like him."! Although we had many more unsavory experiences, one of my fondest memories is of sitting at his kitchen table having Rook tournaments with him and me against his mother and Buck Adams. It was quite a shock when my sister called to tell me of his passing, as he was such a dear and old friend and will be sorely missed.
Although he was my good friend since City Park days, we became closer buds as roommates in Knoxville for years. Jimmy made me laugh like no one else could. I was heartbroken when I got the call from Libby of his passing. One of my greatest regrets was not being at his funeral. I sailed away on my first cruise that day. A selfish act but I know in my heart that he’s cool with it. I think about him a lot and he still makes me laugh out loud.
I'm thinking of my dear frend as I still often do. Known to some as "Diamond Jim Reid, Sofie Tucker's baby boy, and the Kang of professional wrestling!," Jimmy was the most unselfish person I've ever known. I laughed more during the years 6 or so years we were roomies in Knoxville and later after he moved back to Athens, that at any time in my life. He, along with Doc, Frances, Libby, Mary, and Karen were/are family.
I haven't shared this before, but Jimmy was the first friend I came out to that didn't result in a friendship lost. We were still roommates in Knoxville at the time and the 1980's was a rough stretch of time living as a gay man. I remember that Sunday afternoon watching football at our apartment as if it was today. We both had knocked down a couple of brews and the words came out of my mouth in a spontaneous moment. His response was immediate, "So what fag, now go get me another beer." I considered him my best friend then and now. Whenever I feel down in the dumps, I'll sometimes recall a snippit of time shared with Jimmy Reid and start to giggle.
