What is the current tally of those attending this reunion so far?   I am debating it-  is it a weekend or one day of "celebration"?

It is a weekend.  There will be a MA school tour on Sunday as well as the Reunion event from 4 to 11 pm.  Some folks are meeting informally on Saturday, but up to classmates to post.

I agree with Mike.  This is a great website.  Makes CLASSMATES look like amateurs.  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Whether you’re able to attend the “physical” reunion or not, please consider adding to your profile… the “non-physical” reunion!  Robert Steinmetz and the 1963 grad team’s website provides an inspired, generous and FREE opportunity (unlike www.classmates.com!) to “virtually” revisit each other. For that reason, reflect on what you might add to your profile! Besides the basic life/family data, your addition could include reflections on lessons learned and/or felt since we parted 50 years ago. What mundane or remarkable influences/events/people affected you? Where were you when you first heard the Beatles or we went to the moon? We all shared a place in time… travelers in the same history zone and each of you uniquely lived through it. Plus, you might just find that putting it into words could be a priceless exercise in itself!!

You are so right about this forum for catching up.  I know I would love to here about our classmates, and all of their history.  I surely hope that you would start the history book.  Things like when we sat in your pool house and called your "mean" neighbor lady and told her her cat was just ran over.  Get started, we are waiting!

I won't be attending, so I added a few pictures to let you know what has changed in the last fifty years. It's been fun reading and seeing what everyone has been doing. Hope that all those who attend have a great time. If you are ever in Central Oregon and have some time, look me up.

Best to all,

Tom Tripiano

Dear Tom  ~ Great pictures.  Sorry you can't attend, but for you and others, if you download Skype, you may be able to communicate with those of us at the reunion, and or with contacts from other friends on the Reunion Site.  If you register and add your email address, others can 'search' for you on Skype and then send messages or actually do a visual real time ~ face to face video call.  All at no cost, and the download program is free.  Just go to: www.skype.com

Mark Johansen and I did one of these a few days ago from his home in Illinois to mine in Oregon.

If any of you want to give it a try, you can search for me as : rhboeck (or anybody else who's email address you know and who is also on Skype) by using the 'Add Contact' tab, under the 'Contacts' pull down menu. ~

I'll show up on Skype as both rhboeck   and  Señor Roberto

You'll then send a 'request' for the other person to accept the contact. Until they do... it will show up as 'pending acceptance'

If those who are coming to the reunion bring a lap top or iPad, contacts and conversation can go on face to face straight from 'Sparkies' to you...  So... sign on, and bring 'em if you got em'

Best ~ Rob Hirschboeck

As Rob said, he and I SKYPED a few days ago. If you have never tried it, it is great fun. We chatted for about 30 minutes.  Rob hasn't committed yet but I know that I enjoyed it.  We had not had any contact sinse the 20th reunion in 1983.  It is a great way to catch up with "old" friends.

I encourage all of you who are NOT attending the reunion on Saturday to give this idea some serious thought. It is EASY, it is FREE and it is FUN. I know I am looking forward to the prospect of saying HI in person without actually being there.

AND ANOTHER THING ...PICTURES.  I encourage all of you to post pictures on your page. Pictures from yesterday OR yesteryear, it doesn't make any difference. We all get a kick out of the oldies and we are all very curious about the current condition of "things".  There is NO reason to be embarrased of current photographs of yourself.  You worked hard for those character lines and silver streaks or the enevitable male cranial crop circles ... show them off.   Tom Tripiano put up some great pictures of himself and his wife Mary ...follow suit, PLEASE.

OK,  I'm done for now.

PS:  my SKYPE name is:  mark.johansen1213   (if you care).

What a great Reunion weekend! We all had a lot of fun catching up and "missed" the classmates who could not attend. A HUGE thank you to the tireless work of the organizing committee. Kudos to all of you: Robert and Elaine Steinmetz, Kay Davis, Laurie Horton, Sandi Livingston, Jim MacKenzie, Barbara Mercer and Michele Musy.

I have put together a Picasa web album with some fun images of classmates. I would upload it here, but I am not sure how to do it.... go to www.picasa.com and go to Sandra Flattery's web albums and the M-A reunion pics are there in an album..........Enjoy.........

WELL ...it looks like the reunion was a big success.  I am sorry I missed it.

I want to publicly thank Rob Hirschboeck for literally carrying me around the reunion (in his computer) and allowing me to at least see and get a feel for the event.  We did it via SKYPE.  I could sorta see everyone he led me to. Computer cameras are not really meant to capture rapid movement.  I could, however, hear every word that was said.  The unfortunate aspect was that, because of the ambient noise, no one could hear me.  I had to resort to holding up quickly scribbled signs to "be heard".  Keeping in mind that I have not seen any of you in 50 years (ahrg!) and with the camera problems, I did not not readily recognize anyone.  Judy Melton, Joe Martin, Anne Kyle Brown, Gaylen Carney Smith and Ginny Cantwell Stevenson  all identified themselves up front so I could "relate" to them.  I hope the rest of you that I "saw" will forgive the dumb and befuddled look on my face. Although there are those who say it is a normal look for me, I was simply struggling to remember your face.  Ruth Syverson Haynie did send me a link to her YouTube posted video and at the very end "I made the 11 o'clock news".  I know that everyone could see me clearly ...THANKS Ruth, I needed to know that.  It was great fun seeing you all again. I am seriously looking forward to seeing all the pictures from the evening.

AND NOW, a shameless plug for SKYPE. Rob Hirschboeck and I have reconnected via SKYPE because of the reunion. It has been a lot of fun.  IF you are like me ...totally "disconected" from your MA friends and want to reconnect with them, THINK SKYPE.  I was sceptical at first but after talking with Rob a few times and being able to "attend" the reunion, I'm all for it.  It's easy and its free.  Google SKYPE.  SKYPE me at  mark.johansen1213 if you would like to talk.

THANKS AGAIN ROB !

WOW! What a great celebration, partly of the fact that we are still here, but a great tribute to our class. I only regret that we flew up from San Diego for the evening and did not have enough time to visit with everyone. I counted 72 people that I talked to, however briefly, and missed many people that I wanted to see. A great venue and a perfectly planned event. I saw many people while I was speaking with others, including Mimsy Dexter, Marge Rosenberg, and Sandy Sayre, but never had the time to speak with them, among others. I think the committee did a fantastic job, and, while I first questioned the site selection, I think it was more than perfect and a real reflection of our teen years. I was an immature nerd who probably called several people who attended to ask for a date and hung up after the first ring. I have a suggestion. For those of us who want to provide information and stay in contact, maybe addresses and or phone numbers could be added to our profiles. i gave out some personal cards to a few people, but would have given out more had I had more time to talk. And Katie and I would love to welcome alums to Rosarito Beach if you want to come to a really safe place. You can spend time with us or you can have your own access to go out and do your own thing. Again, a great reunion. My email is morningstar.bruce@gmail.com.

OMG....The reunion was AWSOME! Thank you all for putting this event together. It was truly an affair to remember!

The week before, I had searched high 'n low for my yearbook...and finally found the one and only from my Sophmore year. With that, I started wallowing in memories of past friendships from Encinal on thru M-A. For me, It was definately a mixed bag of emotions. I was all sports at Encinal and thru the first two years of high school......Academics sucked.  Since 3rd grade, all my teachers were saying...."We know John can do the work!", but my brain just wouldn't allow me to focus. My twin Sis was gitten it done...why couldn't I do the same. With that said...my "Pops" pulled me out and sent me to a private school so that I could pull up my grades which I managed to do.

But, my heart was still at M-A and I had the priviledge to continue to participate in all of the social activities thru special invites from special friends....Thank you all for that! It meant so much to me.

The night before the reunion, Jeff Stephenson flew into Sac for visit a here.....WOW! We went thru every pic...filling in the memory gaps as best we could and a little before midnight, we pretty well had our thoughts organized with a  "take the best and leave the rest" approach. The reunion & getting reaquainted.... seeing my twin Sis, again, (doesn't she look fabulous!)  would do the rest... that worked out just fine! Thank God for name tags! (see pic)

One noteworthy correction: the envelope at the reception desk contained a photo (not 2nd or 3rd) of my first wife  from the first reunion. I will attach a photo here of my current and beautiful bride, Alma. Our 18th anniversary is coming up next week. I truly am a lucky man! (see pic)

I could write a novel based on all of the experiences over the years, but I will not bore you that.....maybe down the road a ways I will add to it. Meanwhile, feel free to drop me a line at    j.wersted@frontier.com  .........and please know that I keep my memories because we are worth it...... Becasue you are worth it!

Thanks for all of the hugs and kisses and kind words,

Respectfully submitted,

John Wersted

For those trying to post photos on the website for all to see, rather than under your own name, go to the tabs on the lefthand side of the screen and click on "robert steinmetz" which is the last tab before 50 Year Reunion tab.  On that tab, you can post photos for EVERYONE to see.  Just follow the instructions.  I did it once before with photos from Sparky's and now will do it again.  I'll ask Bob (Steinmetz) to send out a memo to the entire class!  soon, Elaine

p.s. The whole reunion was so much FUN--thank you for coming and making it special!

Dear Classmates;  I recently became aware of a Climate Change site Called 'Dear Tomorrow' via the NPR program 'Living on Earth' ~ The site publishes letters one writes to kids, Grandkids, or to our succeeding generations, about what WE, our generation may be leaving them if we don't seriously address climate and our fossil fuel addiction, and CO2 emissions problem.

Writing to your kids brings the reality up close and personal as no longer an obscure issue.  I wrote thiis letter below to 5 year old Kindergartners I read to once a week, to be delivered in 2050 when they won't yet be 40 years old. They won't be 90 in 2100.  I'd encourage all of you to write one too, and send copies to our elected officials as well.  It's our watch; what happens next depends on US.

Best ~ Rob Hirschboeck

======

Dear Emilia and Tommy;       http://www.deartomorrow.org/en/message/dear-emilia-and-tommy/

You know me now in 2017, but I don’t guess you’ll remember me in 2050.  As I write, you are 5 year olds in Kindergarten. As a former high school teacher, I’m delighted to read to you in Oregon’s Smart Reader program.

I know you and the other 5 year old girls and boys I read to, as energetic, often giggly, smiley young kids full of life and abundant potential, delighted in what happens in the books we read together:  “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”, or “Dragons Love TACOS!”  ~ We read together to engage your enjoyment and enthusiasm in stories and reading early in your education to forward the journey, and the magnificent possibilities and adventure of your lives.

But this letter, instead of hopes for your future, is about fears of what I, WE, my generation may be leaving you and future generations to deal with.  That is, the real possibility of a Planet that as early as 2050 and into the next century, before you are even 40 years old may no longer be the supportive and habitable environment it has been for all of human history, for you to live on and grow your own kids.

That increasing likelihood, will be because my generation and its leadership denied and refused to acknowledge or meaningfully confront a Climate ~ changing before our very eyes, nor stopped ourselves from a destructive and addictive energy and fossil fuel consumption habit that feeds too much carbon into our atmosphere.  I fear that we will not have done enough or will have acted too late to prevent a climate on average 6 degrees Celsius warmer by 2100, when you guys will be only 90, and none of you able to do a thing about it.  I’ll know that neither my driving a Prius, nor riding an electric bike, nor turning off my coal fueled appliances will have been enough! ~ For you it will be much worse.

Today in 2017 I know your delight in books about Dinosaurs… (What kid doesn’t love stories of the now extinct T-Rex, Brontosauruses and Stegosauruses?!) ~ I know your laughter at the ‘Dragons who love Tacos’… But NOT HOT SAUCE! ~ Because, hot sauce turns them into fire breathing dragons with inflammatory habits that forever ruin the Fun of Taco Parties.

My generation has in a way become those fire breathing, havoc wreaking dragons who may ruin the party for Every One!  What is tragic is that we, informed by physics and our best science, have known and ignored the consequences of what we’ve been doing for decades.  We know the chemistry by which carbons and water vapor trap the Sun’s heat within our atmosphere making our Earth either receptively habitable to human life, or destructively hot for ours and other life forms.

The Planet we leave you may soon be one with progressively disintegrating and disappearing polar regions, and dramatically higher coastal sea levels.  A world with erratic and massive weather events, with droughts, famines, species die-offs, resource allocation wars, massive migrant populations fleeing politically unstable territories.  ~ And all far more severe than what we already know in 2017, even as we experience year after year the hottest average global temperatures on record.

I’m hoping the best for you, but also truly frightened.  We, in our time, still have the chance to change course.  We have the knowledge and emergent means, even the profitable technologies, to do so.  Yet our politicians and corporate leaders ~ most of whom are highly educated, even compassionate people, who must deep down know better … refuse to act.

                                                                   * * * * * * *

I don’t know if that is out of greed for short-term monetary profits, or self aggrandizing and blinded myopia, but it is where we are.  I do know that IF my generation, that can change the course, does not… your lives will likely be a living Hell.

I am sealing this letter to you, intended for the year 2050, but also sending it now in 2017 to my own Congressmen and Senators, to local officials and the power brokers of my generation.  They have children and grandchildren, nieces and grand nephews too…

You will know before you reach middle age whether my generation acted and succeeded or failed yours and future generations.

When you read this, I will most certainly be already gone.  Before then, I will do my best to save you from the worst, and hope with all my heart that this so lovely blue/green Earth will still be for you a nurturing HOME.

Rob Hirschboeck ~ Ashland, Oregon
