I'm looking this moment at a framed picture on the wall of my study of my old "Crosby & Diegleman" Little League team. There's Ben; we were team mates. He was a good guy at 11 - 12 year old and a solid 1st basemen, who could stretch to nab a throw for the out. I remember that he was subject to seizures, but didn't let anything much effect his quiet and calm demeanor, or his involvement in clubs and activities. He was a gentle man and a really nice guy.
Ben was a close friend and a good man who suffered health problems until his death at the beginning of 1974. He had a healthy attitude, though, and he managed to stay on top of life's challenges in an admirable way. He was the best man at my wedding, and I was the best man at his. He and his wife, Carol, visited my wife and me in Europe in the summer of 1973 when I was stationed in Germany, and we had a terrific time together. His health seemed to have stabilized and his demeanor was cheerful. I had no idea that would be the last get-together. Friends like Ben are rare and are to be treasured. Their loss is something one ponders a long time, but then again, that loss is not nearly as great as that suffered by Ben's wife, mother, father, sisters and brother.
Ben Streit and I were born hours apart on the same month, day and year. We ended up celebrating our birthdays together for many years after high school. He was a terrific guy and I wish he was still with us. God bless him.
