Alarm Scam
A nice young white man just knocked on our door and offered to change our ADT alarm to APX alarm for free. Said they wanted to get their brand name out there and we could help by having a sign in our yard. They would basically switch out our panel and all the rest of equipment would work with their system.
He was very convincing and sounded professional. He said our monthly fee would be $45 for a talking alarm system that used GPS (how a alarm uses GPS is beyond me) and a wireless connection. He appeared to have a City of Atlanta solicitor license but he would not give me anything in writing. One of their ploys is to say they talked/signed up our neighbors. He specifically mentioned the Hares and Montgomery's. If anyone signed up with this company I would do some research on-line. Google had about a 1000 listings saying this was a scam. They also say they have won awards from J. D. Power for service. Buyer beware. Could be a legit company but all the youtube videos from news stations pointed to it being fishy. They make you sign a 60 month contract and if you decided you do not want it anymore, there is a $2,500 cancel penalty. Casing the House - Smoke Alarm Scam I had the same experience as Dana only my thoughts went a bit further. He started out interested in whether or not I HAD a security system. Wanted to know if my dogs were in or out during the day. Was someone home to watch out for fires, etc. (A smooth transition.) I asked him to leave as he kept going on and on after my third "No". I finally stepped out on my deck and asked him a little more forcefully. He seemed to be studying my front door. He also asked me what neighbors were at home during the day. When he did not leave the second time, I asked him more firmly. After that, I stepped out and moved toward him telling him that I did not seeing him leave and that he needed to go right now or we would have a bigger problem. After the fourth time, he left, but very slowly. I think he is up to more than "selling smoke detectors" or whatever. I saw the badges but no vehicle. Next time, I will look at the badge and go inside, look up the company and call them. Even if I don't want the product. I bet they will be gone upon my return. |
