Most of us served simply because we had to serve.. There wasn't a real choice. We didn't understand the war.

However we all grew up quickly. May not be a bad idea for our youth today to do some type of national service.

Great seeing you all in August!.

Harvey, thanks for expressing what I was thinking.

I am ashamed to say, I  never really thought about all of my classmates and the war. I knew about Buzzy and I pretty much tried to put it out of my mind... tho it was difficult !!  I was thankful he was our single loss in Viet Nam. My brother got a great number in the draft and all the guys at UT I was interested in also were lucky in the draft or signed up for the National Guard units near their homes.  At school, I lived in a bubble I created and never thought twice about all of you who were serving and fighting to keep my freeedom and safety in the US. Looking back on all those years, I was really selfish. Now I can say with such pride how important your service was and that so many of you gave up a big chunk of your life to protect me, my family and the citizens of the US.  THANK YOU ALL!!

Although I had a high number, I volunteered for the draft. I am proud that I could serve my country.

I am late with this thank you but want all you guys that served in whatever capacity to know how much I appreciate you. I was expecting my first child when my husband got a draft notice in late 1965. He did not have to serve because of my pregnancy. I did however have 2 brother- in-laws that served in Viet Nam and returned safely but had emotional scars that haunted them the rest of their lives in one way or another. One drank heavily and the other commited suicide later after a very troubled life.

We were all just kids when we parted. I had 4 children from 1966 until Jan. 1974 and was attending classes to obtain my nursing degree while you were serving our country. I had no idea what was going on across the world with you. My lack of awareness is shameful as I look back.  What Buckalew wrote about how you were treated upon return brought it home again in a chilling way. This is why when I hear about WW2 and their generation referred to as the greatest generation I have to be honest it makes me angry even though I am aware of the reasons behind it, I beg to differ. We were the generation that learned to stand up to the hum drum and we made our way in the world in our own way and we still do. Our generation of vets suffered such loss in a wide range of ways and never have received the respect nor gratitude deserved. I want you to know many of us know what you gave and respect you greatlly. You were yanked from boyhood into manhood in a flash and did what you had to without hesitation. You are heroes to me. Thank you !

Happy Thanksgiving to all, but especially to the veterans who remember this Thanksgiving 50 years ago.  I recorded the entire "Alice's Restaurant" the other night when Arlo Guthrie sang it.  I know Vietnam is all too real for you, but relax and enjoy this throw back Thursday.

I wish I could find Alice's restaurant so I could get anything I want. I love that movie and the song.

Harvey Zion

Dear Classmates,

After viewing 2 zoom meetings of the Atlanta Board of Education Naming Committee I am convinced that Grady High School will have a name change. My choice is to have the school renamed for Roger Derthick. If you agree with me or have another suggestion please go to the link below and complete the form. Other people at the zoom meeting have suggested Ida B. Wells who has no connection to our high school. The next meeting is Tuesday Aug. 4th. If you have any questions or would like to see my submission please email me at hzangler@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Harvey

There is a link on this webpage:

Under: Community Engagement
To suggest a name to the committee: please click here.

Think if you go to the webpage url above and click on the here link you can enter a name in google docs which is what they are using for their input. Verbal comments are nice, but the google docs form input is what they will count and use, based on the 7/7/20 online Zoom meeting. Also, they may only allow input during the online meeting times 5-7pm for meetings #2 and #3.

To enter comments you have to enter your email address as page 1. Before you get to page 2, to enter comments. Would be really good to have your comments typed on computer so you can copy and paste into their input form.

Thanks, Harvey, for this detailed information.  Since I believe it is "game over" also, I will be following your suggestion on the name.

Many thanks for the heads-up, Harvey!   I think, if it must happen, Roger Derthick HS is an outstanding suggestion. I intend to follow up.

Are you guys absolutely sure Mr. Derthick wasn't a closet slave owner?

08/04/20 02:22 AM #45

Carolyn Johnson (Faglier)

Thanks Harvey. I agree with Mr. Derthick's name being given to the school. I did comment on the site as you mentioned. Hopefully the name being changed won't be quite so sad for our class if the board chooses to honor him this way. Fingers crossed !

This is just an example of how the "game" has changed our society , sadly . But no matter what happens they will never erase the fond memories of our time at HENRY GRADY HIGH SCHOOL .
