Attended Daytona Beach Community College and GA State. Eventually, I worked at Oxford Book Store and McGuire's Book Shop. Then, I spent 23 years at the Woodruff Library at Emory.
Pastimes include: Singer-Songwriter for a band that had more changes in name and personnel than dollars collected from shows. (But, I remain proud of our original work.) Also, I have an immodest collection of books and an unreasonable number of cds.
Around 1985 I had a big unrequited crush on a woman I worked with. Big emotions led to my committing to song writing. I found I could create melodies in my head while writing lyrics and then sing those a capella. I was very lucky to find a co-writer/guitarist who creates great guitar parts for my songs. In retirement I'm rewriting those old songs, writing new ones, and recording my fifth album. Online as Michael Dean Tippens.

In 1965 five of us went down to Daytona Beach. There was Buzzy Grimes, Dan Varner, Lynn Argo, I think, and another guy, maybe two.
I was so fascinated at that time by the surfing sub-culture that I tried to take the nickname "Surf".
Well, I had my chance to surf on that trip. Varner and I rented a couple of boards, hit the beach and paddled out.
I hadn't quite gotten up on the board before a cop or lifeguard called us out of the water. Trouble is, there was an undertow. It took me so long to get back to shore that I never tried surfing again. (And, I dropped the nickname idea).
