AUBURN | Nicholas E. Pettigrass, 56, of Auburn and Rochester, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Auburn, the son of Francis "Cheech" and Norma DeLuise Pettigrass. Nick was an Auburn High School graduate, Class of 1974. He graduated from Alfred University with a degree in business administration. While at Alfred he excelled in baseball and was captain of his NJCAA team, where he led the team in many categories. Nick continued to play semi-professional baseball after college and was invited to a tryout with the Toronto Blue Jays. He later received his masters degree in Psychology from Cal State Fullerton, Calif. and also his doctorate degree in Education - Counseling at St. Regis University. Nick worked at New Berne School District, Wheatland Chili School District and more recently upon his retirement had been employed by Wegman's in Fairport. Nick was an outstanding athlete in many sports and even competed in the Empire State Games numerous times, where he won 13 medals in track and swimming. In addition to his parents, Nick is survived by a brother, Mark (Nancy McKay) Pettigrass, of Rochester; two sisters, Jacqueline Short, of San Diego, Calif., Francine Connor, of Tempe, Ariz.; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. There are no calling hours. A private service will be held for close friends and family at 11 a.m. Monday, in the Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn, with the Rev. Frank Lioi officiating. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Nick's memory to the American Cancer Society .
