I remember being in Gym class with Alex but I only knew him as Rodarte. We always got along well but he was always a very quiet but respectable person. I do remember that he either graduated early or dropped out to join the service.

A few months after I graduated I remember reading the local newspaper that we had lost him while serving our country.

Rest in peace my friend and you are never forgotten.

Alex D Rodarte US Army, Private First Class, Ifantryman, Company A, 1st, Battalion, 503rd Infantry;

Baldwin Park High School 1964. Name inscribed on Vietnam War Memorial, started his tour in Vietnam May 5, 1965 as an Infantryman (Airborne Qualifed). A member of A company, 1 ST Batalion, 503 Rd Infantry, Alex died at the age of 19 in South Vietnam. He died outright as a ground casuality of gun or small arms fire on 3/19/1966 (according to Memorial Wall History). His name does not appear under Baldwin Park, but can be found for some unknown reason under Compton, CA. A very small matter considering his death under service to his Country. May Alex Rest in Peace knowing the Gratitude of his Country, State and City with Thank You for your Service from the Nation and humbly from myself.

Many memories I have these BP days are fading faily fast.  I still have plenty stored of Alex Rodarte.  He was a graduated of Baldwin Park High Class of 64.  He did transfer from Compton.  Alex was a sprinter on BP’s track team that year.  Alex was kind, considerate and fun  - I am sure he would have been an outstanding adult if given a chance.  I am thankful and fortunate to have known Alex and his wonderful family.  It breaks my heart knowing he had much more life to live before it being abruptly taken from us all…  We just didn’t have enough time..

I trust the local Vietnamese community in some form, shows appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice these kids like Alex and their family made - for their freedom.
