One of the most wonderful human beings I have ever known. Her smile and caring touched everyone she met. Karen was a bright, uplifting, unselfish friend. I'll not forget picking up the newspaper at the end of our 1/4 mile drive, seeing that unforgettable smile under the terrible headlines and walking in shocked tears back to the house.

Karen, her husband Denis and their 14 month old son died on Swissair flight 111 in Sept. 1998. They were traveling from NYC to Geneva, Switzerland to visit his parents-who lived in eastern France near the Switzerland border-and to introduce them to their "new" grandson.
The plane was consumed with fire (sparks from faulty wiring ignited the insulation) and went down in the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia. All 229 passengers died. I remember the crash but went back to look up the details. While searching I found the following

"The Maillets were very excited about going home to visit Denis' parents," said the Rev. Gerald Burns of St. Aloysius Church in Baton Rouge.
Maillet, a native of Lyons, met his wife through their work as engineers, said Jayne Thibodaux, a family friend.
He spoke no English and she no French, but they quickly learned each others' languages and fell in love, she said.

As Adults, we now know the word a " beautiful soul",
and we know it when we meet them.
I did not have 2 be "Grown Up" to see this beautiful soul when in high school, she beamed caring, hope, happiness,...
