Udate: Jul 18, 2021. Covid's Delta Variant is still around. Florida didn't get enough people vaccinated. Now we have a stubborn amount of un-vaccinated residence. Covid ramping up again. March 2020 We became "Staying-in-Place people. After a year we got use to staying at home. Curt has COPD and he can't afford to get Covid. We are told now that fully vaccinated people, as we are, can get Covid but it won't put us in the hospital. I'm not sure about Curt? So we continue to be safe and even being told we don't need to wear masks, we wear masks when out in public and avoid crowds. I now have repairmen fixing things here in the house but I keep Curt well away from them. I had stop seeing my beautician and getting my hair cut back in March 2020. But yesterday I ventured out to a well spaced shop and again got my long gray hair cut short. AH So nice. But we came straight home because we didn't need groceries.
My home is large, one story with no steps. So getting around is easy. I love the pool and every morning I take my coffee out to the pool, get in the pool even if my degenerating spine won't let me kick and swim. I still enjoy playing in the water. Palms trees and palm shrubs surround my pool, giving privacy. I can look out across the small lake in my back yard and see a small park and neighbors across the lake but my landscape lets me relax in private. I watch the bright cardinals, blue birds, doves and other birds fly and sit on my chair link fence to eat berries. I don't encourage squirrels so they stay away from me and my fence keeps out the raccoons. They can walk around in the grass between my pool and the lake! The water fowl are not a plentiful for some reason and I miss them walking with their mates or babies.
I get out of the pool and have built a very large area with my gazebo frame and two huge rectangle umbrellas back under the Bamboo Palms in giving deep shade where I sit and read for a few hours. I finally hit the slow down and smell the roses. (smile)

2020, Aug 6.
Curt Pearson and I lost our schoolmate, Percy Nelson Hazel .
Nels passed away in the Vero Beach Hospital with Covid. I put a Memorial on Percy Nelson Hazel Class site with lots of picture t0 show the fun we had with Nels. My Florida friend, Bruce, stops by to enjoy the shade out by the pool with us. We continue to miss Nels. He was such a good friend; so positive and so fun loving. He & his wife were going to move here but Linda passed from a return of cancer. Nels settled this in Bellingham and came to live here just a few blocks away. So he was always a part of our household. Curt finds some days hard without Nels catting about something.
We were 3 Bellingham High Kids on a retirement adventure in the sun, that was us.
I stopped teaching Landscaping and How to plant your yard with Florida plants at the Library long ago. I still have some contact with a few old students.
I continue to use my computer almost daily but time sitting at a computer is hard these. ..so I find other things to do.

Not much to research on my family tree but I wrote a lot of biographies for many members of my tree now. I am starting to update and fill out the brief biographies. I wish I my skills were better because I want to include what it was like living in their time. I need to do that while I still remember things like my grandmother with an old washer, manual wringer and two galvanized wash tubs for 2 rinses. Grandma was born and live on Lopez Island. Her father had 3 wives and 13 kids. He moved to Lopez in 1800's and many of his older children fallowed with their families. My grandmother was the middle family with only two younger sibling from his 3rd wife. I now communicate with a grandson of her youngest sibling. He is a retired timber man up in BC Canada. He still can't stop doing something with timber as his children & nephews run the sawmill he and his brother built and own. Another shirt tail cousin and I write. She is in Texas. But I have lost contact with the Washington famlies. Mostly through death.

I still make Beignets after a few visits to New Orleans' Farmer's Market with their Beignets and Coffee & Chicory (a true love of mine). I recommend Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans. I have tasted Beignets in Dallas and other places but nothing compares to Cafe Du Monde's.
Florida is not a coffee drinking place as Seattle was/is? I like like Hawaiian Kona Coffee and send every few years for a lb of Pure Kona coffee. Florida folks are ice tea drinkers. I have become hooked on Ice Tea. Or Fresh strawberries in champagne! Not often but my doctor recommends an enjoyable cocktail at bedtime. I'm not one to take pills but sleeping is difficult these days. Sipping champagne with an ice cube during the last movie on TV at night.. with a few big strawberries dipped in powder sugar seems to keep away the nightmares I seem to have started. My mine is too active and I need to chill out. Stop spending my time thinking of when I was younger and could run and dance. No more skipping rope and no more dancing these days. Hip going. (smile). But that is ok. My mind is still sharp. I love my two Burmese cats but I miss my harlequin Great Dane. He was such a wonderful friend.

I still move furniture around this big house to make it feel different to us. Curt just throws up his hands. We did need to get a new TV for the front room. My son encouraged me to get an LG this time and 65" flat screen. It doesn't take much more space on my Grandmother 100 plus plus yr. old small dining table. Strange little table. Has one leaf that automatically folds up under the table top. Pops up and lays out after you unlock it with a little ring in the front of the table. Makes a small dining table. I like old solid wood furniture. I dislike veneer, which is all I can afford these days. But I have a large oak Lion's Head solid wood dining table. Hmmmm should have brought more of my old family furniture when I came to Florida. Hind sight is good but irritating.

Yesterday Curt and I were talking as we sat out by the pool. Florida was a good choice for a comfortable retirement. 12 months of sunshine. But to have this, we left old friends and all our family back in Washington. One day Covid will actually be handled and hopefully my nephew may come and visit. He is past retirement but doesn't know what people do when they stop working. Maybe I can show him (smile).

School Story

I never write or talk much about school. My school life was: trying to get good grades; working after school; and watching other students. I was too shy to get involved.

In my endeavor to be un-noticed I found Mr. Emery loved to call on students to read out loud. Oh how I hated that. I found he was irritated by asking him what a word meant in the middle of my reading period. Not paying attention, I busied myself with pointing out words "what does this mean". Mr. Emery was a very smart and patient teacher but he got tired of my antics. I came to the word

Hi Dave: Curt Pearson and I are still alive and well in our home in Florida. Slowing down at 83 years but still up and moving. I tried to post a picture of Nels (Percy Nelson Hazel) on your profile but it may not work. Go to my profile Mary Joanne Reece/Miller and I have a couple of picture I found (you will enjoy). It is Curt and Nels in 2017. Love to hear from you. Give Curt an email. Hugs

Percy Nelson "Nels" Hazel passed in Florida hospital from complication caused by Covid in July 2020. He was 82 His family laid him to rest beside his wife Linda in Washington State. But Nels is never out of our lives as Curt and I both miss him so much. He and Linda use to come visit in my home here in Florida. Nels loved Florida. He and Linda planned to move to Florida but Linda's cancer came back. We had one more visit from them before she passed. Nels was taking her on one last vacation. Afterwards Nels returned and looked for a home, buying a place with a big ingound pool just a few blocks from our house. Nels was just part of our housewhole and many car rides and just playing around took place. Nels kept Curt and I laughing. He so enjoyed life. Here in Florida he collected more vintage cars but he could drive all of them 12 months out of the year because of the constant wonderful weather. I talked with him at 5:30 pm, making sure to have things set up for his getting out of the hospital. I was shocked to find he passed away the next morning in rehab hospital. We were all the same age but he was so vibrant and we were not prepared to loose such a wonderful person from our lives. So we remember him always and continue to wish he was here to join in with us.

Hey Judy, Happy Birthday. Do you remember your neighbor across the street in the 1400 block of Franklin? Yep, it's me. I can still remember a lot of our long walks to high school that we made together. Also your engagement in the Bellingham Hearld when you were living in Seattle area somewhere. I never moved from Bellingham and ended up across the alley from my parents home on Franlkin but on Ellis Street Then I retired at 66 and wanted to head for a warm place to live. I went directly to Florida and have been here for abt. 17 years. How you have a wonderful 83rd Birthday dear friend !!

Congratulations on your up coming birthday. Years ago I started right after my birthday giving my age as one year old than I was. In the beginning, it doesn't hurt to say I'm a year older. Just makes people think I look good for that age and I KNOW how old I am. Don't care what others think. And the bonus is at my birthday... I celebrate it happily. I got so use to being that age it was fun to realize I was really a year younger than I pretended. I know it is lame but don't knock it until you try it. I do enjoy my birthdays every year !! I hope you have a wonderful birthday on your DAY !!

Nels is now a Florida Boy. October he is making Florida his permanent resident. Still a tough nut. You should see him in his muscle shirt. He say Florida brings out the California boy in him. Loves the weather, swimming (naked when he can), top down, walking every day and having a blast. And yes Dave Rudy, he is keeping healthy! Good for him.

Dear Judy: It may be 'that time' in life when we seniors tend to find more moments to sit back and remember our childhood. There were good times for me while living on Franklin Street; my brother and I playing with the neighbor kids. When I was older you moved into the house across the street. We started walking to school together each day. Those long walks were are fond memories. I do remember you often and although I have moved to Florida and gotten rid of most of my pictures, the pictures we took of each other are stamped in my mind. I don't need them on paper to see them anymore.
Your Birthday is coming in about a week, so before I forget or get into one of my many projects that makes the days slip by too fast.. may I wish you a very Happy Birthday to a lovely person. You were always a better person than I was and you had very good parents to start you off on your journey in life. Be happy and live long dear Judy.

Percy Nelson "Nels" Hazel is flying in again on the 15th of July. His 3 weeks (abt May) was not enough and he purchased a home this month about 9 blocks from us. It's a well built home from an estate sale. He has desire to do a bit of upgrading in the kitchen & A/C system but it is a home with good bones. He has hardwood floors. You can get a clump of 3 Christmas palms for about $100 that easy to pop in the ground because of the small root ball. Tropical plants are inexpensive and need little water to be lush. He will have a pool and he loves to swim after his morning walk of a few miles. A huge fenced in back yard for his dog, Boo, and a huge garage for his car hobby. Can't wait to see what he thinks of it when he gets to see it in person. In October he & Boo will drive to Florida with is new (sort of) Pod trailer to stay the winter.
My major back surgery worked and I'm walking again, even starting to get my side 'secret garden' started. Want to get out and paint my house Light sky blue with lots of white trim to go with you bright yellow front door. I find landscaping & home decorating lots of fun in my retirement. Florida style, plants, light and constant sun is a whole different world from living in the woods of Bellingham. I miss the huge trees and the smell after a rain but always loved summer and being out doors and we get a breeze from the Atlantic. Only abt 3 months a year is so hot that I can't have all the doors open to the huge sun porch and pool area where I prefer to spend my down time & evenings. It is all good. Mine is the house on the far left. The house back yard faces South which is great for solar power on the roof. The parK is on the left at the end of the lake. Neighbors on only one side (nice neighbor) lot of privacy for my back yard.

Well the 14th you'll be 77 or is it 78? See you in Florida on the 15th. Welcome anytime, you have the code to the Guest Rooms if we are out. See you soon! Bet you can't wait to see your new Snow Bird home in Lakewood Park in person. Don't know how long your staying to sort & set things up but know you'll be back in October ready to spend the winter. Excited to see you and see how you like the new house in person. It is a very large lot. You got your 2-1/2 car size garage & your dog, Boo, will love the fenced in backyard. It will be even better when you start to make it your own! Congratulations on your Birthday and the winter home you bought yourself. Many more years & 12 months of sunshine. Healthy, talented, strong guy like yourself has a productive, enjoyable retirement ahead. I'm always happy to see a bright future for we seniors. Love Curt & Joanne
