Douglas Campbell

Douglas Campbell

Douglas Campbell's sister, Nancy, said that Doug passed away in 2005.  We are all saddened by his death.  Douglas was one of the most outstanding students in our class.  He excelled in math and science, won many academic awards and eventually received his Ph.D. in computer science.  At BYU, Doug was an outstanding professor who was loved by his students.  He is survived by his wife and four children.

“Douglas M. Campbell, 58, died Monday of pulmonary fibrosis. Campbell, BYU professor of 30 years, taught a broad range of classes in the Computer Science Department. Campbell also wrote several books on topics ranging from retirement planning to Halley”s Comet. ‘He should be remembered for being one of the brightest people that showed up at BYU,’ Higgins said.”

From The Daily Universe (BYU), December 13, 2001

It doesn’t say where he met his wife, Jill, but they got married in 1966, when Doug was a grad student at North Carolina University, having just graduated from Harvard.

I recall when in high school Doug had an invectious laugh and always a warm friendly smile for everyone.  He was a gentle soul liked by all.  It is interesting how some people stand out in your mind even after 60 years and for me Doug is one of those.  I can just picture him walking down the corridors as well as standing in a classroom with a big grin on his face.  Hearing of his demise just brought memories of him to the forefront of my thoughts.  God bless his soul and all his family.     Phil Shecter

I just bought two of Doug's books on Amazon. One is about Dr. Halley and his comet. The other is about math and society. Very broad thinker!

I was in the science club with Doug. He was indeed the smartest guy in the class. I stll remember his amateur ham radio license: call sign K6GNL  or as he would say it K6(Germany Norway London). Doug was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I remember Doug and Ken Perkins being the leaders of our science club and their projects were the talk of the group. RIP my friend.
