If I recall correctly, I met John in the eighth grade at Tierra Linda.  He had actually come from Hungry and described how life was growing up including skiing using boards strapped to his feet.  He said he and his friends would climb up a hill, then tie the boards to their feet and ski down the hill.

I am saddened to learn he passed away last year.  He was always friendly to everyone and I hope his family are doing well.  All of us who knew him and went to high school with John are better for it.  Rest in peace dear friend.   Phil

It was a sad day when I heard that John DeVos had passed.  Any one who either knew John or was a teammate realized what a tremendous athlete and person John was.  After high school, John married Sharon Clark, a Carlmont grad from the class of 1962.  John got his teaching credential and taught and coached at Burlingame High School.  John Christiansen, a mutual friend who graduated from Burlingame High in 1961, told me that John was a successful coach who was well-liked by both his players and their parents.  In high school, John was not only an outstanding basketball player, but  was a major reason why the Carlmont baseball team won the league championship in 1961. In our senior year, we had a very good basketball team, led by John and Gary Gaskill.  One day after team practice, John asked me why I didn't shoot alot.  I told him I didn't have any confidence in my shooting ability.  John laughed and said to me, "You miss 100% of your shots if you don't take any!".  The next day, Coach Hawley had to stop practice to yell at me for taking too many shots.  John walked by me and said "My bad!"  John was a really good friend and we will all miss him.

After he retired from teaching, John and Sharon moved to Medford Oregon, where they lived until his death last year.  They raised three children, Jill, Tim, and Lisa.  I'm sure that no one has to tell them what a wonderful person John was.  They know.
