1987 Remember When:  Sept to Dec

Ronald Reagan was still around the White House.
Maggie Thatcher was still leading the Conservatives in the UK.  
Mikhail Gorbachev was in the final stages of driving communism and the Cold War of its inevitable cliff.  


September 17 - The 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution is celebrated across the country.  (Today we are at 220 and thankfully no more amendments!).

October 14-October 16 - The United States is caught up in a drama that unfolds on television as a young child, Jessica McClure, falls down a well in Midland, Texas, and is later rescued.  (She is married now and has a kid.  Feel old NOW?)

October 19 - BLACK MONDAY.  Wall Street crashes BIG TIME.  

October 23 - The US Senate nixes President Reagan's appointment of Robert Bork to the US Supreme Cournt.  

November 18 - Iran-Contra affair: U.S. Senate and House panels release reports charging President Ronald Reagan with 'ultimate responsibility' for the affair.  

December 1 - Construction of the Channel Tunnel is initiated.  

December 2 - Landmark 'Hustler Magazine v. Fallwell' is argued before the US Supreme Court.  (Brilliant case if no one has read it).

December 28 - Prozac debuts!

1988 Remember When:  Jan to May

January 1 - Mikhail Gorbachev starts Perestrokia.
January 3 - Margaret Thatcher becomes the longest-serving British Prime Minister this century
January 15 - Jimmy the Greek opens his big mouth; gets fired.
February 13/28 - the 1988 Winter Olympics are held in Calgary, Alberta
February 21 - Jimmy Swaggart cries on TV over a little personal indiscretion
March 8 - 'Super Tuesday' of the 1988 Presidential Election; Bush 1 wins big
March 10 - Andy Gibb Dies
March 16 - Iran-Contra begins with indictment of Oliver North and John Poindexter
April 11 - Rain Man wins Best Picture at the Oscars; Jodi Foster (The Accused) ties with Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist) for Best Actress in a Drama.
April 12 - Sonny Bono is elected mayor of Palm Springs
May 15 - Russia begins to withdraw from Afghanistan after a long, bloody 8 year war
