After B-CC I went to U of Michigan for 2 1/2 years--creative writing--and then hit the road for a while and began working in wilderness programs for city kids (living in Montana, Alaska, New Mexico, Colorado, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Florida and West Virginia). Came back to DC and worked at transitional house for homeless folks while finishing BA at Catholic U. Then got MSW at Howard U. and went to Guatemala to volunteer at free hospital. After returning to DC I managed homeless shelter and then started first substance abuse treatment program in DC for homeless Latinos. Later started Hermano Pedro DC Multicultural Day and Women's Shelters, Harriet Tubman Women's Shelter, Fortitude Housing DC, and other programs for mentally ill homeless people. I met my wife Karume, from Peru, in 2003 and we were married in 2005 (Moorhead, Upston, and Dahl were in attendance). In 2007 Washingtonian Magazine named me a Washingtonian of the Year--a long way from the Moon Bounce (aka Jupiter Jump)!
Westbrook "bad boyz" memories:
the book with "dirty words" in it that we had hidden in the boy's bathroom ceiling (Moorhead and I got busted by Mr. Z for this one); going to Bowl America to buy smokes and hangin' on the railroad tracks; the "putting the sleeping guy's hand in warm water trick"; the fort, trampoline, and woods behind the Upston House; "spin the bottle" in Moorhead's basement; sneaking in to see "Risky Business" with Landau (summer after 6th grade); hardcore spitball warfare and pencil fights; and last but not least--Moorhead dunking Ms. Ramsey
