Karen died in Seattle in the early nineties of breast cancer.  She and her husband (Paul Shapiro?) adopted a couple of daughters.  I saw her a few years before she died--she was the same.  I remember her mother and grandmother--all the hours spent at her house.

Thank you, Kathy, for sharing this information on Karen.  I remember how pretty she was and also a very nice person.

Karen must have moved to Billings during our junior or senior year.  She would say, "I'm from Great Bend, Kansas," with a southern accent that gave "Great Bend, Kansas" about six syllables.  She was darling.

Karen and I met when we were seniors at U of M. We should have stayed good friends instead of getting married. She had the ability to make people laugh, no matter who the audience was. She excelled at entertaining and used dance to convey her humor, even though she didn't like being on stage. If my serve was going well I could beat her at tennis but if it wasn't or if I lost my touch, she would whip me without mercy. She taught me how to play real volleyball: bumping and hitting with a closed hand. I met a lot of interesting people through her- Kathy Astley, for example became a good friend.

When Katen laughed, her eyes filled with tears. That is my favorite memory of her. Not much noise, lots of laughter, lots of tears-so cute, so fun. xxoo

I used to walk part way home from grade school in Great Bend, Kansas, with Karen. We had differing beliefs. She didn't believe there was a Santa Claus or a North Pole; it was really the South Pole. (A miserable penguin exhibit had come through town the previous summer). She claimed adults had sexual intercourse (we had seen a word scrawled on the sidewalk), and she described the basics. It seemed implausible.

I think we moved away from there before she did. I am very sorry to learn of her untimely death.
