Steven “Steve” Charles Skuhra, 74 years old, passed away in St. Vincents Hospital, Billings, MT on May 4, 2024.
Born July 9, 1949 in Cody, Wyoming, the family moved to Billings when he was six years old. He graduated from Billings Senior High in 1967. He served in the Army in Vietnam right after high school as a motor pool mechanic, was severely wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.
He had a few minor jobs before he worked as a draftsman and then learned all aspects needed to be a telephony (tellefanee) engineer. If you were able to make a phone call he could have designed the cabling, wiring and fiber that made your call go through.
On October 16, 1993, he married the love of his life, Colleen. Before and after retiring from the phone company he built street rods ( taking vintage cars and trucks giving them new life). He retired back to his mountains in Montana and settled in Absarokee, Montana to a family cabin.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years Colleen Marie (Carroll) Skuhra. He was a very loving dad to Misty (Shawn) Vermulm, Anna Carroll (Robert Hicks), Kandi (Chuck) Schuman, Angie Nicewander, Amy (Micah) Cristaldi and Sam Handeland. Siblings; Mary (Dennis) Hust, Jeanne (Dan) Carroll, and Karen Million. There are many special nieces and nephews. He was a devoted grandfather “Papa” to his grandchildren Levi, Alyssa, Joliee, Mahrya, Gavin, Greeley, Lydia and Tabitha and three great-grandchildren.
Steve was such a caring, good man with a very “punny” sense of humor and was the very definition of integrity. So artistic and mechanically-inclined, he was highly talented and a gentleman. He was also an avid fisherman.
He told us he needed to go check on mom in heaven.
No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Steve’s name may be made to the Absarokee Senior Center.
