My understanding via my mother, who worked as the career counselor at Groves in the late 1980s, is that Steve died in August 1989 following a fist fight in Dayton, OH, shortly before he was to begin freshman year at the University of Dayton. He had a heart condition, and he collapsed and died following the fight.
