James (Andrea) Tischler

I was shocked by the sudden passing of John.  At the reunion he seemed just fine.  I enjoyed talking with Sheila and him and reminiscing about all the funny high school stories and adventures.  John was a good friend in high school and we managed to stir up mischievous trouble that mindless teenagers often conjure up.  I'll always remember driving around in his father's new Valiant, you know the kind that had the buttons for gears.  He would rev up the motor and push the first gear button and the car would burn rubber for 100 feet.  So much fun but really bad for the transmission, I'm sure.   On weekends we'd drive that thing all over B-N.

John was a brainy guy.  He was intellectually talented.  I remember he was the editor of the Aegis, on the golf team and played Dr. Gibbs in "Our Town".  After rehearsals we'd let off steam.  It was so much fun with John, Patsy, Fabulous Foret, Randy and sometimes Tom Murray.  Steak 'n Shake was one of our hangs.

John wanted to be a pharmacist like his dad, Merle (Merle's Pharmacy).  But I don't think he cut it there.  He was a bit on the lazy side.  A real fun guy who always had a smile on his face.  He had a pleasant easy going style.  He was a good friend in HS and I will miss him.

Gee, is this the specter of things to come?  In a way the reunion in September will become a harbinger of sad things to come.  Yes, folks we are all getting older and will face our eventual mortality.  But it will be especially tough for the survivors who will remember the deceased for all the memories and fun loving times spent together.

Maria and I send our condolences to John's large family, especially his wife, children and grandchildren.  He is very much missed but will not be forgotten.

The last Aegis for 1961. I thought it would be appropriate at this time.

Thanks Milan for the updated photo of John.  You are always on the ball.  My brother Danny who was in the Guards with the two of you, said they didn't have an obit of John in the Pantagraph so I'll let him know how to see this or send him a copy.  My brother Marvin says he thinks he knows you also.  Do you recall him?  He may be mistaken because he has dementia.

I knew Marvin and Dan. There was an obituary in the Pantagraph but no picture. I found this picture in the Monticello paper in Indiana.

Thanks Milan for searching for a "now" picture of John. You found a good one. I remember sitting with Patsy

at breakfast across from him.  He was a nice guy and enjoyed talking to him.    Sheila

Want to have some fun talking about old Bloomington/Normal as we remember it? Join this. Lots of people from BHS are members. All members are or were living here. I hate Facebook but this is a hoot. Lots of great pictures too.

Hello everybody,

This is a werid time of the year for me. Christmas over, New Years's etc.,  Seems like Spring is so far away.

I am babysitting my grandkids while daughter and husband are on a cruise....(sigh!)...why aren't we all on one!

Wouldn't that be fun...warm sun. blue skies and water...laughter all around...especially at us in bathing suits! ha!

Just wanted to check in and see if everyone is ok and anybody doing anything special that we can be jealous over.

Later, Sheila Hepworth

I have a tennis match Saturday against Pekin. There is a team for players that are 60 and above. If any of you want a fun workout (no treadmills, no stationary bikes, no weights) come to Evergreen racquet club and start playing. It will help you keep in shape. Remember, if you don't use it, you lose it.

Is anyone else as sad as I am over the loss of Davey Jones of the Monkees?  That was such a fun show.  One of the first really different TV shows.  It was like a cross between the Beatles and the Three Scooges.  Plus he was in our age group and too young to die, just out of the blue.

What a great idea to have scheduled mini-reunions!!!  I will keep the time frame in mind when I make plans to visit Bloomington.  You guys and gals are great!  I am so sorry that I missed such a wonderful 50th party, but I enjoyed everything vicariously through the photos on the website!!

Sandy

Would more people attend the mini-reunions if they were scheduled for a Saturday lunch time?  Those of us who live within a few hours driving distance might be more likely to attend and still be able to drive home that same evening.  Just a thought.

Donna; I brought your idea of a Saturday lunch up to everyone last night at CJ'S and they thought it was a great idea. We just need to set up a date to do it and post a note.

Jack, Thanks for bringing the possibility of a future Saturday lunch "mini-reunion"  before the committee.  It would make it easier for me to attend and still be home that same evening.

We are  looking forward to being able to attend one of the "get-togethers" in the near future.  We live just 2 1/2 hours away, so we will be able to come and get back home the same evening.  Attending an evening event makes it difficult given the one hour time difference (Indiana is one hour ahead of Illinois time) resulting in getting home at a late hour.  We are getting too old for that!  I imagine others would have the same circumstance.
