Remember the Fire Station  on West Front Street, fire poles and all!T

How about the Auto Hotel  on the Northwest corner of East Street and Jefferson?  It's still there and being used for its original purpose.

It was nice to see a picture of the Central Fire Station.  My father was a Captian and work for 29 years as a firefighter.  I on occasion was able to have lunch in there kitchen, and slide down the brass fire pole.  My bother and I was able to use the pistol range in the basement for target practice.  At Christmas time a Christmas party was held on second floor for firemen kids.  The station was on EAST FRONT in the 200 block. The last I knew there was a resturant in there.

This picture was on another website this morning and I found it very interesting.  How many of you remember Raymond Scharfenberg, he used to hang around the ball diamond at Miller Park and O'Neil Park.  He had problems but he loved to be around people.

Barb,  I certainly remember Raymond as whenever we swam at Miller Park it seemed that he was there.  He loved the water and was quite a memorable character.  I never knew his last name but it seemed that everyone knew "Raymond" and enjoyed having him around as he just seemed to enjoy life and interacting with "friends".  Thanks for sharing that memory.  👍😀. Best,  Corky

April 29 is Miss Mary Selk's 100th birthday. In the early 60's she had beautiful salt and pepper black hair that made me think she must be close to 100 then. How little I knew then about when and how one grays.

She was our instructor for choir, Madrigals, Trebleairs and other small groups. She set a high standard for excellence as evidenced by many Superior awards for her groups at state competitions.

My mother was at Westminster for 3 years before she died, and I was able to visit with Miss Selk several times. I talked to her last Christmas and she said she is doing well except she now uses a cane or a walker for stability. Bad Knees. Until Covid she still attended Second Presbyterian and lead the Sunday afternoon Vespers at Westminster. She is still as sharp as a tack.

Covid has prevented the anticipated 'Musical" reunion that was planned for this occasion, but we will do the best we can. If you are interested please send a card to her % Westminster Village, 2015 E Lincoln Street, Bloomington, IL, 61701. Westminster would not confirm her apartment number but said it is not necessary.

I'm sure a flurry of cards would brighten the day of a very fine lady. Thanks to all and stay safe.

Hi Barb. Just read the nice note from Cheyrl Brooks and Corky Snerdly. Would you be kind enough to say hello  from  me as they were both good friends.  Have a wonderful Saturday.  I unfortunately did not ever meet Mary Selk but wish I had. JIm Wilson

A little example of how downtown Bloomington has changed.  The first picture is the Northeast corner of Front and Main Street back in the day.

This is how it looks today, big difference.

Wow the old picture of Front and Main and the new updated picture. Seems like the old way was better lots of people and cars. The new picture has two people and no cars other than one parked.

Thanks, Barbara, for posting pictures of the fire station in which I learned to shoot in the basement there.  I worked at the auto hotel for a year before I joined the Marine Corps. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

This morning I saw this picture of the old fire station on another website and it shows what it looks like today.  From the corner of the old station to the West is now a parking lot.  All of the buildings which were there were razed.  I have the habit of getting on my soapbox about all of the buildings we have lost for the sake of a parking lot which maybe has ten cars sitting in it at anyone time.  The YMCA sat on the corner of Washington and East and it's incorporated with the parking lots here.  Our downtown is slowly being taken over by none  other than parking lots.

This is a picture  which was on Facebook today and it said it was the Shoup backyard taken in 1945.  Which one is Larry or Terry crawling on top of the swing?  It looks like  they had plenty  of entertainment along with enough friends to play with.
