This morning I saw this picture of the old fire station on another website and it shows what it looks like today.  From the corner of the old station to the West is now a parking lot.  All of the buildings which were there were razed.  I have the habit of getting on my soapbox about all of the buildings we have lost for the sake of a parking lot which maybe has ten cars sitting in it at anyone time.  The YMCA sat on the corner of Washington and East and it's incorporated with the parking lots here.  Our downtown is slowly being taken over by none  other than parking lots.

This is a picture  which was on Facebook today and it said it was the Shoup backyard taken in 1945.  Which one is Larry or Terry crawling on top of the swing?  It looks like  they had plenty  of entertainment along with enough friends to play with.

Who remembers Sandy's which was located on the corner of Towanda and Empire.

Here's a copy of their menu.  I thought they had the best French Fries in town and I can see why now, 15 cents which fit in nicely with my budget.

My parents when they retired would go there once a week and when I came to  visit always enjoyed going with them.

Hi Barb: Some very nice posts today. I will never forget Sandya. Byron Tucci and I would go there every  day after double sessions football practices  and drink about 3 or 4 large cokes.  Back  in the day they were so uninformed  and did not let us drink any water during twice a day double sessions football practice and of course It was Ibero Bertignolli and Bloyce Bess. who were the coaches  Those were some great old times. It is lucky sombody didn't  die from dehydration. Imagine getting a burger, fries and shake for $.55.  What a deal but I guess I was making about $1.15 an hour then on my part time job.  I too recall those fries as being very good as were their shakes.  Thanks for that memory Barb.  👍

Ever eat at the Grand Hotel?

How about Phone-a-Feast.  They had great chicken but they served it in a paper plate then put another paper plate over it and stapled it shut, I was always afraid of getting a staple stuck in my throat, however that didn't stop me from eating it!

Barb, thanks for this post.

Even though it has been more than 56 years I do remember working at Phone A Feast my senior year in HS and 1st year at ISU. My first car was a 1936 Plymouth 5 window coupe that I bought from my great uncle for $1.00 ( $1 made it a legal sale). I drove that car delivering dinners for Phone A Feast. Back then they were not located on Main St, but were a couple blocks east I think it was on the corner of N. East St and Kelsey St. Chicken dinners were $1.50 plus  tax Steak dinners were $2.00 plus tax. I made 50ct per hour plus tips. Gas was 20cts per gallon.  Usual tips were around 50ct to $1. Christmas eve and New Years eve tips were much better. The lady/owner had a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville and often had to go to the Peoria store. One night she let me drive her car as mine had broke down and was being repaired. A  man and his wife worked the kitchen

Delivered a lot of meals to students at Wesleyan and ISU usually poor tips. When I wasn't delivering I helped out in the kitchen. Back then I thinkI knew every street in Bloomington Normal. Many of  the regulars I did not even need directions. Of course we had no cell phones or gps so you learned quick. Now I can barely remember Fell Ave the street I grew up on. Have not been backto Bloomington since the early 80's when my father passed.

Still believe it was the  best fried chicken and french bread I ever ate.

Remember the Tilden Hotel? It was razed for none other than a parking lot for People's Bank Customers.

This picture is taken on East Street by the Consistory, note the brick pavement.

Thank you so much, Barb, for the birthday wishes.   Thanks also for the many photos that bring back fond memories.  Can you find any pictures from State Farm daycamp, because our parents worked for State Farm. My mom was a teacher and they really liked  to hire teachers because it was open only about 2 1/2 months. So many of us spent our summers out there. We were on the swimming team and we went to the day camp where we learned  to play tennis, shuffleboard, badminton, make lanyards and other crafts, to canoe, so much variety. We camped out, and played "steal the flag" at night on the large grassy area across the lake. They even offered horseback riding. So many wonderful memories.
Who else has memories of State Farm daycamp?

For those of you who had Miss Selk for a teacher, you know she celebrated her 100th Birthday the end of April. Here is a picture of a display one of her former students did for her on the lawn at Westminister Village.  I also understand they had a drive-by for her too.

This is a picture of West Front Street, how many ate at the Federal Cafe?

The next one is Dairy  Lane which is now the home of Beer Nuts.

This is a picture of the Freight Depot which was on East Grove Street.  I'm wondering if it was right before Robinson Street, for some reason that sticks in what little mind I have left!

How about the Coca-Cola Building which was on Bell Street.

Remember Breakfast at Shannon's this Wednesday at 9 o'clock.  Our numbers are starting to pick up a little so hopefully we'll have a good turn out.

Barb,  Many thanks for the pictures.  I worked at Rodger's Shoe Company and often had the "Blue Plate" special at The Federal Cafe.  It was always pretty good, especially for $.35 and a dime was a nice tip for the counter waitress.👍  My dad was the bottler at the Coca Cola plant for 25 years until they closed up shop.👎  But fortunately the Irvin brothers who operated the Pepsi Cola plant hired him right away and we were very thankful.🙏. Best,  Corky

Barb:

When I went to Emerson  school you could get a free bottle of Coke at the plant if you  showed a report card with an A. My mother was a waitress at the original Steak and Shake, Illinois House, Clay's Chilli Parlor, Auth's , Holiday Inn, Streids, and Smittys.  She raised 2 kids on tips at Sunnyside Court next to the aromatic Ralston Purina. She is up for sainthood.

Thanks for the way-back machine.

Did anyone ever eat at The Wishing Well?

How about Cottons Village Inn?  This would never go today because you dined downstairs and there was only one way out.

Was Cottens Village Inn in the basement on the corner?  If so I did eat there a couple of times.

Ron, I remember to if you got a A on your report card you could get a Coke at the bottling plant.  I found it easier to go down the street to the WareCo gas station on Clinton St. for a nickle and get a 6 oz cold one out of there machine.

I attended kindergarten thru sixth grade.  I got serveral pics of various classes.

Ward, Thanks for the post on the Federal Cafe. I too, spent some time in there.  Food was pretty good, reasonbly priced, but most of all I had only a half hour for lunch.  The food was on you table with in minutes after you sat down.  Also spent some time in the Grand Cafe across the street.

Barb:

I remember Raymond Scharfenberg at O'Neal Park.  He had an innocent smile and always had his baseball glove ready to play. He was the ball boy and mascot for the local industrial  teams, such as Lasch Dairy.  Because of his disability he was often teased by the local bullies. May he rest in peace.

If you were lucky at the park you were chosen to sit on top of the concession stand and run the scoreboard signs.  It was the best seat in the house, and you got a free hot dog.

Ron
