My absolute favorite place to get Pizza was Casellas, what I wouldn't give to have one from there  some 50 years later.

This is a copy of the menu with prices, you'll note the pizzas were a little over a dollar.

This is a picture of Quinn's Gas Station which was located on North  Main Street across the street from Holy Trinity Church.

This Gas Station was located on the South East corner  of East and Front Street.  Anyone who bowled in the bowling leagues in high school which were held at Savidge Bros. will remember it.

Barb Iremember that Texaco and also  the one my parents used. I was also on Main a little further north Murphy's Texaco. I believe it was across the street from the Gailey Eye clinic. Whenever I needed gas or something on my car all I had to do was sign a ticket and my dad paid a bill once a month until Texaco made all their stations require the use of the Texaco CC.

Hi Friends, Quinn's Gas Station:
We knew Elmo and his family. We went to his full service gas station where he would pump your gas, wash your windows, check your oil, and, if needed, put air in your tires. Elmo came out of his station in his coveralls, a rag sticking out of his pocket, and always with a smile on his face.
Cotton's Village Inn: Cotton McNabney was my Dad's cousin. We ate at the inn and always enjoyed the homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and delicious pies. The restaurant was underground with several smaller rooms for eating off of the main dining area.

Grand Hotel: We would eat there and loved the chicken. My Dad knew the owner, Skinny Benten. In back of the restaurant was a large building. When the circus came to town, the performers would practice in there and sometimes stay there, too. Jeanne Shaffer lived across the street.
Love all the memories and the stories and people who go with them.

Thanks Barb for remembering Memorial Day 2021.
Our son, my cousin and brother, and my Dad were all in the service, two in the Navy and two in the Army. To the men and women who served and are now serving and their families remembering means so much.πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

Barb:

I remember the Steak and Shake later becoming King's restaurant.  They kept the same Shake product.  My mother was a waitress at Auths.  We upgraded to Holton Homes, so she walked to work. The other corners were Devary's Grocery and Holt's Confectionary, a great place to buy penny candy. I remember my sister and I rolling her tips in paper bank tubes on our kitchen table.  I also used to be chased off Auths sidewalk for roller skating. Auths later became the West Room with country music.

Like Bob Hope sang "thanks for the memories."

I also remember when there was a Steak n Shake on South Main the block North of I think Olive Street.  Bakers Hamburgers and a Liquor Store were in the same block, many moons ago.

How about going to the Dairy  Queen for a big cone, I'm not sure if this was the one in Bloomington or Normal  but it looks really busy.

Or a trip to Ventura's on South Main.

Barb thanks for the recent posts. We always went to the Zesto by Hubbards Cupboard.Really enjoyed their chocolate dipped cones.  I recall my father saying the owners made enough during the summer months to live in Florida  during the winter

Ward "Corky" Snearly

Barb,  Thanks for the birthday wishes.  I always felt it was a special honor to be born on D-Day and have always had a special interest in WWII history.  What a tremendous effort and sacrifice by the U.S. and Allied Forces to storm the beaches of France on June 6th and to begin winning the war in Europe.  I am saddened that we no longer see and hear accounts of D-Day and what it meant in the history of freedom.

And like Phil, we always went to Zesto since it was just two blocks from our house.  I recall they had cones from a nickel to a quarter.  We usually got the nickel cone but occasionally the ten cent size.  The quarter cone was huge.  The couple who owned Zesto were very nice and I believe they told me they had a Zesto in Florida too and went back and forth with the seasons.

Best,  Corky

There is not going to be a Breakfast this month.  The people who are usually there are gone and I don't want to sit in Shannon's  by myself so we'll do it next month.

Barb:

My quess is the Dairy Queen is now Gene's Dairy Delight on S. Main.

We have lost a lot of local owned restaurants .  One of my favorites was Kips on Morrisey. I miss the booths with the orders which you phone in, the homemade root beer in frosted mugs, and the tenderloins in the red plastic baskets.

Hi Barb,

Thanks for the picture of the State Farm fast pitch softball team "The Chiefs". Spent many summer nights at their games at State Farm Park ball field. I remember the pitcher was really good. I think his name was Hoke Wilson. Thanks for rekindling some great memories from my childhood.

Dad and I watched home games at State Farm Park as much as we could.  Usually walked to the park and back, sometimes got a drink or popcorn.  I chased foul balls several times.  One of the most cherished times I had with my dad.
