Patti Perry (Daubs)
Thank you to all of our classmates who donated to the bench fund; and, especially to Jerry and Janice Scott Vitton and her brother Jeff and sister Janenne for all of the groundwork it took to get the bench in place. Thanks, also, to Barb Kincaid Menken for, not only keeping our website going, updated and interesting, but for collecting our donations. I also want to recognize the support for the project from the school administration and maintenance staff.
As you can see by the photos posted, we gathered in the walkway area between the gymnasium and classroom building for the dedication. We were also joined, surprisingly, by the marching band practicing, just as I was going to give a little history of why we thought doing something in recognition of our class seemed like a good idea. Since the band was much louder with drums on one side of us and horns on the other, I was quickly drowned out, so we just proceeded to BCC for gathering around food and conversation. Thanks also go to our class member who hosted us at the Club.
The history of the building started with the Board of Education purchasing about 40 acres of land in 1947-48, in anticipation of future needs of the school district, post WWII. Ground was broken in 1957; the first shovel of dirt excavated for the high school was taken out of the ground by classmate Connie Bush Banndeko's father, who was on the Board of Education's building committtee. The building was open for Fall semester, 1959, our first year of high school. So we have the distinction of being the first BHS class to attend all three years of high school in the new building, designed by local architects, Edgar Lundeen and and Dean Hilfinger. It was referred to at the time as an "unappreciated modernist building." Now it stands out as "mid-century" and a much appreciated architecture style.
Go Raiders! There was some mention of another reunion in 2027. Yikes, we're getting old! Best wishes to all!
