BLOOMINGTON — Peggy Jo Shirk Schluchter, 66, formerly of Bloomington, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2014) at Eisenhower Medical Center, Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Peggy will be laid to rest in her hometown of Bloomington following a family graveside service. A memorial will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at Central Presbyterian Church, 7700 Davis Drive, Clayton, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ThriVe, thrivestlouis.org, in St. Louis, Mo., and Crisis Pregnancy Center, choiceline.org, in Palm Desert, Calif.
Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.
Peggy was born Oct. 31, 1947, in Bloomington, the daughter of Russell Orville and Betty Jane Shirk. She married Murray Joseph Schluchter on Aug. 30, 1970, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomington. He currently resides in St. Louis, Mo.
Survivors include her two sons, Joseph Russell "Rusty" (Lisa) Schluchter, Chicago, and John Robert (Misty) Schluchter, Omaha, Neb. Peggy left six grandchildren, Coco, Joseph, Noah, Gia, Eli and Nina. She is also survived by her brother, James Arlo (Linda) Shirk, and her mother, Betty, both of Bloomington.
Peggy lived most of her life in St. Louis, Mo., where she faithfully supported and passionately served alongside her husband, Joe, in Christian ministry through their church, Central Presbyterian, and Lay Renewal Ministries.
She began her married life as an elementary school teacher and always had a warm heart for young children. Peggy was an avid cook, gardener, seamstress, golfer, tennis player, hostess, mentor, book club member and scrapbooker. Peggy had a tender heart for young wives and mothers, unborn children and those less fortunate than herself.
Peggy and Joe spent more than 40 years vacationing in Rancho Mirage, Calif. They also enjoyed many years at their chalet by the lake in Innsbrook, Mo., where they later built a permanent home.
Peggy was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and had an impact on many lives. She leaves a legacy as a tenderhearted, compassionate person who placed a high priority on the spiritual growth of her family. Her infectious smile and sense of humor put people at ease. She will be greatly missed.
