Bill Butler
Hello Dan, Philip, Larry, et. al....
Your comments about Steak-N-Shake are interesting. Gus Belt rented an apartment from my parents at 911 N . Main St., however, I did not know Gus personally. My dad would take my sisters and me, as kids, to the SNS for milkshakes that were so thick, they came with a spoon instead of a straw. My dad would always order the hottest chili they had. Funny how one can remember little things like that but forget more important suff -- and no comments about senility, OK.
Then, moving in time into the BHS-era, the two B-N SNSs were the place to cruise (as previously noted), barely moving through the parking area just to check on who was dating whom, who was not grounded, and who was able to get the car by telling their parents they were going to the library to study for tomorrow's test. As I remember, the art of the cruise was perfected by the likes of Aldy "go low and oh so slow" Harwood, and Vance "Mario Andretti" Lausmann in his Model-A Ford, and of course, Nicky "wild and crazy" Mimken in his Renault Dalphene that suffered at least 21 accidents! (Nicky never went slow). And, I wonder if Aldy invented the California style low-rider? I'll bet that all these guys own fast bikes, Porches, Maseratis, and 'Vetts now.
BTW, there are about 650 SNSs nation-wide now..... and that adds up to a lot of cruising. cheers, Bill
