Yes, I remember!  I believe it was Jr. Hi.  The girls on one side of the gym and the guys on the other!

How many remember going to the Steak n Shake on Hannah Street?  You could get a hamburger for 25 cents, fries for 15 cents and a drink for 10 cents.

A catch-up comment. What happened in July or August of 1943? So many birthdays!

Never did eat at Casellas, never could spell it.

Loved Steak and Shake either on Hannah or the original loation on Virginia and Main in Normal. Still eat at Steak and Shake here in Vero Beach although this is probably the worst one in the country. We actually walked out one day after sitting for 25 min or so waiting for a menus. We were the only ones there and several workers just were standing there doing nothing. As we were leaving they wanted to know if we were ready or order. Groan! We stillgo back because of the food, though, we're not crazy!

Living here in Texas (DFW area) we have access to quite a few S&S. they opened here about 20 some years ago and we excited to have them. However the old Bloomington/Normal ones were the best. Great fun cruising from one to the other just to see who was out on dates and so forth.

I only got to S-N-S when a friend would give me a ride.  We did the "Gag and vomit" route a couple of times a night.  Would stop for a coke and watch everyone else drive by.

On another note, my cousin Alvin Maxwell started out as a curbie at the original Steak-N-Shake in Normal.  Gus Belt was his boss and Alvin ended up working for S-N-S, even moving to St. Louis, MO with them.   His dad was my mothers older brother and he got her out of an orpanage in Kentucky and she lived with Alvin and his two sisters.  They kind of thought of mom as an older sister.

Hello Dan, Philip, Larry, et. al....

Your comments about Steak-N-Shake are interesting.  Gus Belt rented an apartment from my parents at 911 N . Main St., however, I did not know Gus personally.  My dad would take my sisters and me, as kids, to the SNS for milkshakes that were so thick, they came with a spoon instead of a straw.  My dad would always order the hottest chili they had.  Funny how one can remember little things like that but forget more important suff -- and no comments about senility, OK.

Then, moving in time into the BHS-era, the two B-N SNSs were the place to cruise (as previously noted), barely moving through the parking area just to check on who was dating whom, who was not grounded, and who was able to get the car by telling their parents they were going to the library to study for tomorrow's test.  As I remember, the art of the cruise was perfected by the likes of Aldy "go low and oh so slow" Harwood, and Vance "Mario Andretti" Lausmann in his Model-A Ford, and of course, Nicky "wild and crazy" Mimken in his Renault Dalphene that suffered at least 21 accidents!  (Nicky never went slow).  And, I wonder if Aldy invented the California style low-rider?  I'll bet that all these guys own fast bikes, Porches, Maseratis, and 'Vetts now.

BTW, there are about 650 SNSs nation-wide now..... and that adds up to a lot of cruising. smiley  cheers, Bill

How many people remember going through this entrance?

Thanks, Barb, for continuing to keep this going. I enjoy the old pics you've added. That looks like the east side entrance to Miller Park ?? (not Wood St.) I don't remember the name of that street. Our family spent a lot of time at Miller Park - certainly picnics and fireworks every 4th of July.

Remember one summer night around midnight it was so so hot I believe the entire city was trying to keep cool at the park.

We didn't have A/C back in the days.  Open windows and maybe a fan.  Since we only lived a few blocks from the park I could lay, at night, in my bedroom and hear the lions roar.  It was almost like they were in my back yard.  In the jungle the mighty jungle the lions roar tonight.

I hadn't been to Miller Park since my kids played Little League Baseball so three years ago I decided to ride through.  The picture I posted of the entrance on Wood and Summit and another one on Morris and Wood you can no longer go through, the road has been taken out.  I had to go down Morris Avenue to the entrance by the swimming area.  The cages where the animals used to be able to go outside are no longer visible, they've been overgrown with brush.  A lot of  the  roads from our time have either been shut off or taken out for whatever reason, I'm so thankful I knew the "old" Park.  I'm posting a picture of the Pavilion and the Animal House from our time.  I remember going to an All School Dance, Washington, Bent and Irving in Junior High which was held at the Pavilion on the second floor.  Needless to say with so many kids dancing the floor was kind of swaying and I hoped we wouldn't end up on the floor below.

How many of you remember Hubbard's Cubord?

How many remember the Tenderloin?

I remember It well. Also In the parking lot was the Zesto Ice Cream shop. My mother liked to go there in the summer and of course I did not mind going along for a vanilla ice cream cone dipped in chocolate.

Thanks for all the memories Barbara.

Here's a picture of the Zesto Ice Cream shop. I took piano lessons down the street and if I had a good lesson I got a cone as a reward.

Barb, you played the piano so well!!  I loved to listen to you play!!  I remember you had perfect pitch!  Amazing.

My husband (Trent Holland) was a cook at Hubbards while he was in high school (Trinity). We decided that he probably cooked for me before we ever met

Barb,

I have pleasant memories of the Zesto and Hubbards Cubord.  I lived a block away on Mulberry street and we would often walk there to get an ice treat. I believe the owners name was Marion Tate, I think I spelled it correct.  I also seem to remember he was involved with Eastland Mall which I think opened in 1967???  The mall had a grand opening which included a race from Eastland Mall parking lot to a Joliet Mall.  I believe the race vehicles could not be motorized.

Barb, thanks for bringing back the "Good Old Days". I remember them fondly. The YWCA dances were the

best.  I loved the music and dancing, still love that music today. I had a special outfit I used to save for the Saturday night outing.  My Dad would pick me up at 10:30 p.m. on the dot when the dance was over. I remember Steak n Shake. We would start out at sns and get a hamburger, drive down Main Street, the "boys" were not the only ones traveling thru Bloomington and Normal to see who was with whom and who got the car that night, etc., then go to McDonald's for fries and a coke.  Or some nights we would start in Normal, get some fries from McDonald's, travel down Main Street, and stop at sns and get hamburgers and milk shakes. Jerry and I had our first date, I think, at sns and now over the years we will go there sometimes on our wedding anniversary, 53 years this year.  Up and down the streets we would go for a 50 cent meal. Cassella's Pizza was a stopping place also, delicious pizza.  Miller Park, we would drive thru there, also.  We used to swim there and my Mom loved to go fishing and we would do that, too. I took my children there when we were in town and now I have picnics and go thru the zoo with my grandchildren when we all go to Bloomington. Hubbard's Cuboard had a great tasting tenderloin meal for a $1.00. I still enjoy a good tenderloin.

Hope and pray all are well, Stay Safe.  Janice (Scott) Vitton

I rode my bike to Zesto so often that owner would see me and have my Rootbeer freeze ready.  He would winter in Florida selling property and then he started Eastland Mall.  Steve Brienen and I were curbies there at Hubbards.  I think Bill Lamascola worked there also.  I was the fountain jerk there when that position opened.  I loved to make beautiful chocolate sodas and sundaes.  Myron's dad was manager then.  I also loved the hot beef sandwich as well as the tenderloin.   I didn't like cleaning up all the equipment and mopping the floors at the end of the shift.  One odd thing... all the individual catchup dispensers were emptied in one jar and put in the cooler overnight.  Each dispenser was washed every night

.  Those were the days before I drove.  When I drove I started working at Steak n Shake on Main Street.

This is so much fun and brings back so many wonderful memories.  I remember driving through Steak and Shake with a bunch of girls in our convertible, and they all ducked down so it looked like I was driving through by myself. I was so embarrassed!!  Also, everyone chipped in a quarter to pay for the gas.
