That was when a quarter for gas was 👍  This isolation now is like back then when gas was cheap and I'm grounded

Connie, I was one of those who ducked down. I believe Mary June and maybe Lynda might have rounded out the group. Sorry about embarrassing you but at the time it was so much fun. ;-)

One of my all time favorite stores in Bloomington was Livingston's and you knew Christmas was around the corner when the Santa's went up.

How many of you ladies remember the Capezio shoes?

This is a picture taken by the Lafayette Apartments  which are West of the old High School on East Washington looking towards downtown Bloomington probably from the 50's.

This is the same area today.

The Lafayette Apartment Building is such a great old building. Mrs Curran, 7-8th grade Washington Junior High English teacher lived there. My brother-in-law, Tom Hoffman (Dewenter's manager) spent his last days in a cool little apartment with a screened-in balcony on the back side of the building.

Thanks for finding these pictures, Barb.

Who remembers Miller Music and their little booths where you could listen to the current hits?

I would go to Miller's Music to purchase new sheet music to play on my flute, and then listen for over an hour to popular music before walking home.  Did that all through junior high and high school.  You'd be surprised how long it took to pick up the sheet music!  I remember seeing Barb and other band members in Miller's, too.  Great times!

I bought oboe and sax reeds there beginning in 1954 then traded in my first guitar for a Gibson LG1 which DI traded in for my current Gibson SJ in 1963. Always liked the Millers.

How many people remember Darlings Fishmarket?  I think it was located on the corner of Center Street and Grove.  During the summer when they had the door open you definitely knew they sold fish.

I have seen this picture before of the Popcorn Stand East of the Castle Theatre.  Apparently it was quite popular but I can say I never went there, did anyone?

I remember always walking by this and breathing in the lushes smell!  I think we even stopped one time to get a bag of popcorn.  That was over 65 years ago.

I don't know how long he owned the popcorn stand, but geometry teacher, Cliff Drew owned that stand for a while. He lived next door to the Hostetlers and always gave me grief in class because I was going with Pete. He loved to tease in public and embarrass and I was always a good candidate.

George Miller was the father of Jim Miller in our class

Thanks, Steve for your remembering that. I was just thinking that was Jim's father, our classmate, at least from junior high, if not also elementary, was the owner of the popcorn stand. They lived on Willard. But, I saw in the list of classmates, there is no additional information. My mother was a cashier at both Irving and Castle Theatres for a while, so I'm sure I got popcorn there. She worked nights; one the weekends, I got to stay up late enough that I could ride down with my grandparents when they would pick her up after the money was counted and then we would stop at the Prairie Farms store (off E. Washington) on the way home and get ice cream.

Barb, you're doing a great job jogging memories!

Patti

I knew that was Jim's dad and always got popcorn there before going into the Castle Theater.   It was just a nickel a bag and I was always amazed when I saw others buying their popcorn 🍿inside the theater where I think it was a quarter.  We were very happy that the Castle Theater allowed you 🤞 to bring in the popcorn 🍿which was quite nice.  👍 That way we could spend our savings on candy 🍭inside the theatre. &nbs>

Barb, great work on these memory joggers.  Cork

Who remembers Chester Wonderlins Store on North Main Street?  I also remember when he played  Santa Claus. C

Patti Perry (Daubs)

That's a great "sign" for Wonderlin's, Barb. My mother worked there in later years, when they did more custom picture framing. I worked there at nights upstairs assembling the final art work for a few years. Chester had a great velvet and fur Santa suit. If kids visited Santa downtownd uring our growing-up years, he was that Santa.
