I remember it quite well. Unfortunately Elvis recorded it and stole Joe's thunder. I also think I remember Joe was a very good competivie swimmer as was his sister Susie. My sisiter was in the same class with Joe and was also a competivie swimmer. I believe she an Joe hung out in the same group as some of them including Joe came over to our house on occassion.

Adolph would be so glad to know that your fan has worked all of these years.Adolph's opened in the fall of our senior year. Merchandise that arrived before the opening was stored in a freezing cold warehouse. I remember opening the boxes, checking contents against the invoice, computing the sticker numbers and placing the little red price stickers. In great freezing agony. I gained much useful knowledge from being a checker throughout college. Brooks was a wonderful manager, very respectful of his employees lives. A good role model, a wonderful father. I miss him.

Who remembers the Velvet Freeze?  I know there was one in Normal and I thought they had one on South Main.  Were there any others?

Barb, I think there was one in Bloominton on South Main Street on the East side of Main about a block or two from Wood Street.  We use to walk up there for a treat.  It was a brick building on the corner.

May's bike shop was accross the street.  Repairs and new and used bikes sold.

On the corner of Main and Oakland was Sheperds grocery.  Got my hair cut at Chuck Holleys on Main Street just past the ice cream shop.   Good memories!

This is Woolworths store which I frequented every Saturday with my 25 cent allowance when I was little. It was sad when it closed because it was so unique on the inside, it was made I think into office space.

Here  is the  lunch counter which I thought was the neatest thing, I'm sure I tried every seat in the place, probably never ate, just tried the stools.

Back to the days of 25 cent allowances. When Terry and I went to Metcalf and had an hour lunch, our father would pick us up and take us home to eat. We'd stop at The Little Boss Dairy (know where that was?) and get a couple of gallons of milk for ffty cents. (We had Roger and Judy at home, too so we went through a lot of milk) Anyway, I rember the glass gallons with the metal handles and I remember hod "upset" our father was when milk went for 35 cents to 50 cents a gallon. Of course, $3000 a year was a good income then!

There used to be a Velvet Freeze on I THINK it was either Clinton or Clayton Street and I believe it was south of Oakland Avenue

A few of us Irving Jr. High girls used to go to the one on South Main after school and they let us make our own cones etc.  I think the "gang" was Diane Daughtery, Joan Houchens, Sandy Cox and me.

If you lived on the West side of Main Street you probably remember Jerry Lutz Market.

My "go to" store was Park Store which was right across the street from Miller Park at the corner of Allin and Wood.

I came across this advertisement for Barney's Fine Foods, we never ate out when I was growing up but I remember going there when I was older.  Did any of you grace this establishment with your presence?  Name some places where you went to eat.

Well like many families from the 50's my mother was a housewife, my dad grew a small vegetable garden and we had fruit trees. My mom and my aunt would can the fruits and vegetables and make preserves. Dad worked for State Farm and when he got home dinner was on the table shortly thereafter. On the weekends during the summer dad liked to cook outside. There was a Steakhouse restaurant somewhere west of downtown that we would go to 4 times a year for birthdays. Occasionally as a treat we went to Steak and Shake, Hubbards Cupboard, ordered Fried Chicken from Phone A Feast and when  mom went shopping downtown, I always voluntered to go as we went to a cafeteria that I can not remember the name of but I got to pick what ever I wanted to eat. Simpler times but maybe better or maybe good old days syndrome.

Phil, my Mom was a stay at home Mom also.  She's the only person I know who could cook hamburger 100 different ways and to this day I love hamburger.  My Dad worked at Eureka Williams and television was in its infancy and he started selling them and also repairing them.  Our big treat was maybe twice a year going to Steak n Shake, eating out was a big deal.  It was such a simple time back then and I'd gladly go back.  By the way, was it the Jefferson  Cafeteria  you went too? I also think there was a Thompson's Cafeteria downtown but it might have been before our time.

We ate out a lot while our dad was alive. He sold advertising for the Bloomington-Normal and Peoria Labor Newspapersor so we had to visit those minds of places. Auths on W Market, The Serverite Steakhouse on E. Front, The Country Kitchen which became the Sinorak, The RoJo in Lexington, The Beanery  on the west side near the C&A shops, Benningos (sp), and of course the Steak and Shake, the many coffee shops around town, the Jefferson Cafeteria, The Illinois House. Most of that stopped when he died in 1954 but we were rolly-polly by then.

In the late 60's we did dine at Barney's on a few special occasions.  As I recall they had a pretty decent filet for $7.50.  Our favorite was Ike Weavers, Ranch House on MaGreager St. They had a fantistic cheese spread.

Others  favorites  of the 60's, Marion and I enjoyed were Benningo's, Barneys Caboose, and the Bungalo, on Oakland Ave, accross from Krogers. Bob Johnson Brantville, and Streids.  Our daughter love the Pondarosa Steak House.

My mom was also a stay at home mom, and my dad was a Bloomington City fireman.

Thanks for the great responses. More memories stirred up that had been long forgotten ( not getting old just moved away in 1963 and  did not have this great site to keep us up todate) thanks to Milan and now Barbara for keeping it going. Barbara it was the Jefferson, Larry thanks for reminding me it was Auths, that was where we went for Birthdays 4 times a year and since my dad liked the Filet thats what I always got and it was medium rare. Allan, Bob Johnsons was a place my mother liked, she said if truckers ate there the food had to be good. We also enjoyed quite a few family picnics at State Farm park.
