Susie Dowell (Emery)

I was in the first third grade class to attend the brand new Oakland Scool. It was very exciting, not only because of its newness, but all of the rooms were on the ground floor( after being in enormous Emerson School, or as it seemed  to me) There were so many windows and the best part of all was that each room had a  door to the outside. So we went in and out of our classrooms in the morning and afternoon from the outside door.

And another part of loving the school was  that it was so close to my home. I just had to cross Oakland Avenue and walk down three houses.

Thank you Allan and Barbara for the ride in the time machine for the kindergarten picture of 1949 at Emerson school.  I'm in the picture.  I recall walking to school.  I lived on the street next to the ICC railroad tracks, and my mother insisted I walk under the bridge on Oakland.  When she was not looking I would cross the tracks and ravine to Emerson on a secret path.  The tracks are now the Constitution Trail,  I recall the black coal fired steam engines going down the tracks and my mother cursing the railroad gods when she had laundry in the backyard and the soot from the trains getting on the drying laundrry.

The three bridges at Miller Park.  The first one is on Summit Street.

This one is in what they used to call the lagoon when I was a kid and it's since been replaced.

The last one is the one everyone thinks of when they think of Miller  Park.

This was my favorite Dime Store, McLellans.  I got 25 cents a week for an allowance and every Saturday I went there to spend it.

And directly behind McLellans was State Farm.  I've shown a picture of it before but I think this one shows what a grand building it is.  Notice the window air conditioners.

Happy New Year to all the members of the "Great Class of 1962" the first sophmore class to complete 3 years at the new BHS.

Thanks to Barb for picking up the mantle of keeping us posted on Bloomington and our classmates.

Really enjoy all the pictures as I have been away from Bloomington for more than 50 years. My Dad worked in the State Farm building and I enjoyed when I was young being able to visit him on occassions in his office.

After Barb posted her pictures of the bridges at Miller Park, reminded me of my pics of when the big bridge fail down. Know idea when but I think it was late 1961,

Thank you Barb for being a go getter as you were in the past. Hard working. Thank you for your chairperson effect in this valuable group.

Our class was unique as being the first class through the new building. It is sort of like a family in nature whereas we are not in the same room or thoughts we gather around the uniqueness of our past.

I hear or see familiar names and I get a flashback of those short years at BHS. More frequently I see the names on the obits published by the Pantagraph. Some are familiar as customers rather than a classmate.

I was a "wall flower" during BHS and not familiar with names that I should know. I would like to give recognition to those who recently have succumbed to the COVID-19. I can't correlate my memory to the published names that sound familiar.

Is there a way I can "Yell out" electronically on this group: Thanks for the memories to those whom have passed on recently.

It means a lot. to me hearing names of the past. But my sadness is shared with their families.

I'm isolated in France with just digital news to keep me informed of former classmates. To those reading this: You have formed me into a person that is still thanking you for attending BHS simultaneously with me whether you knew me then or not. Thank You!

It is with great sadness that Larry Shoup asked me to let the class know that his wife Reta passed away this afternoon.  She had Covid=19 and she ended up with Pneumonia.   I spoke with Larry a few minutes ago.  He was concerned that the class be informed.   No plans have been made about a celebration.

Prayers would be appreciated for Larry as he and Reta have been dear friends for many years.
