Mr. Connell was a different kind of person. For some reason he really liked Johnny G and me and gave us some leeway. I don't remember how this happened but he had a classic (not as much of a classic back then) Mustang. I don't remember the details of it but it was a fast muscle car. He took John and I for a ride in it once. So John is in the front seat and I am in the back. Hanging in the back next to me is his preacher's gown. Sorry I don't know what else to call it. As it turns out he filled in as a preacher from time to time. So were on 35W I think right around the river and he says "hey watch this" and floors it. Who'd have ever thunk that he was a Ricky racer priest. Now the whole Mustang thing is starting to make sense.
So after High School John and I went to visit him one day and nobody answered the door. We looked in his garage and the car was there. A day or so later we read that he had passed away and the best we could tell it was the day we tried to visit.

Thanks for stealing my story Bret.

Another memory from Mr. Connell was reading "Arsenic and old lace" out loud in class with me reading the part of Reginald in an over the top, bad impression of Cary Grant and Bret playing the part of Teddy muttering "Bully" and screaming "CHARGE!!!"

I would like to think that H.B. got as much of a kick out of it as we did

I also remember that Mrs. Luckfield was not nearly as impressed with my acting abilities when we read "Of mice and men" in her class and I played Lenny (the big mentally challenged friend of George)with passion and vigor and ended up visiting the principal's office because of it

I thought it was a rabbit, But Mrs. Luckfield didn't let me get that far so I guess I'm off the hook anyways

Tell me 'bout the rabbit George.

At least he wasn't after Bambi.

Come on you guys doesn't anyone want to golf on the Friday before the reunion? I am, and I suck! But it should be a blast! It's best ball so you don't have to be good. Just drinks and fun!

Hi everyone,

This is so cool! I lost my yearbook over twenty years ago and have never gone to a reunion so I am having so much fun with this website. Thank you so much Craig for putting this together for us, I know I really appreciate it and am having fun reading all of it!

Has anyone heard from or about Peggy Leach? I would love to know how she's doing?

Does anyone else feel like you're regressing back into your old roles - jock, nerd or whatever? Maybe it's just me. In case you're wondering what a pastor does late Saturday night when suffering sermon-block, this is it!

Cindy L. Westlund (Kriesel)

I don't feel like I'm regressing, but I sure am thinking how many of our classmates I missed out on knowing because of some of those roles. (Is this what they call 'wisdom'?)

I think that's what they call 20-20 hindsight and isn't that the truth.
I'm just trying to figure out exactly what category I fit best in. Probably band geek. We could cross party lines.
I don't know if I am remembering this correctly but for those of us who went from Portland to Kennedy I remember there being a clear division at Portland I guess mostly between the jocks and the freaks. But then didn't we have a year (9th grade?) where a jock was crowned king and a freak was crowned queen? I think I remember who but because I'm not positive I'm not going to guess. If you know for sure bring it. It seems to me from that point forward, at least with some in those groups, the two would hang out once in a while on weekends. For whatever reason that has stuck out in my mind. Hopefully I didn't just imagine the whole thing. I know I have relayed that story before so I'm sticking with it.

Mark, now you have to tell us what your sermon ended up being about.

I can't believe you remember back to 9th grade! I remember the blower and everyone hanging out down there. I also remember running up and down the hall kicking guys in the crotch (god knows why!) and finally getting my punishment and being locked in my locker!

Going back to Mrs. Luckfield...I remember always messing around in her class, she must have liked the principal or something. She threatened, but I didn't make it down there.

And Mr. Connell, he was a bit eccentric for me...he used to always tell our sophomore english class...."moritorium the foolishness!". I still don't know what that means. JK But that is great that you got a ride in his Mustang!

Also, I guess something like this does break down the walls of cliques we had...though I remember being at the 10 year reunion and the others after that, speaking to people I never even had said hi too (either too shy or stupid) and thinking that it was great to see that wall within me come down a bit. But we will always go back to our roots when we get together, I see that too...Portland and Oak Grove. And junior high was some good times too...

Sue, I laughed so hard and out loud when I read your little confession that I had to leave my house because I didn’t want to have to ‘splain it to my wife and daughters. I went to the store and was laughing in there too. Not sure why it is so funny but probably because I was never on the receiving end. And the mental image is priceless. Do we need to wear a cup to the reunion?
The last time I was in MN I planned it around attending the Firemen’s Tournament because that is almost a high school reunion for all grades. I remember looking over at Portland and thinking we should go hang out by the blower for old time’s sake.
John G if you read this you owe it to us all to tell a related story. I already stole one of your stories so I won’t tell this one.

Sue - good grief, what were you thinking?! What the heck else went on at Portland?

I was so ticked about having to go to Oak Grove JH with only about 10 kids from Pond. Then I spent 3 years making new friends, and then most of them went to Jefferson and I "had" to go to Kennedy, back with kids from Pond that I didn't know anymore. I even skipped days and rode my bike over to Jefferson to hang out with my friends there. (I was convinced Oak Grove kids were much more mature than Portland kids - real mature, huh?)

Bret--If you still are an active (and founding) member of the KISS Army Fanclub..... you may have a clue as to which clique you belong to. If you still have an Ace Freley t-shirt, it's a lock.

Sue P-- I'm glad our short dating stint was post nutcracker phase. yikes!

First concert ever, KISS and Uriah Heap, 1976. I look to my right as I write this and there is a b/w picture of KISS on my wall. Top drawer of my dresser contains a KISS T-shirt. There is a KISS Destroyer blanket draped over the back seat in the Mach 1. How pathetic am I? No need to answer that. But, I only listen to them on vinyl if that gets me extra credit points. Not a single KISS CD.

Pete I’m glad to read that you never fell victim to Sue’s hobby.

Has anyone seen my Farah Faucet poster?

PS the Golden Rule does rule so hug a KISS fan.

Bret,

My husband says you get extra extra credit for the vinyl! This coming from a guy who shuns CD's and has over 10,000 records. My house is an LP museum! ha!

It really is great that the clique walls can crumble with time. I think I was a "choir geek / b-team jock". And the sermon was titled "What's Next?" My theme was that no ones life turns out like we planned it would be. Can I hear an amen?

"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." Proverbs 19:21

Okay, I'm stepping back out of the pulpit now.

How many went to the Eagles, Pablo Cruise and Steve Miller Band at the Met Center? Oh, and of course, Lori Eicher you remember this, the good old Kicks games tailgating in the California lot.

By the way Pete, I was over the kicking by the time we went out. HA!

08/11/08 03:04 AM #66

Adam Fka Kim Lee

I was one of the many thousands at the Eagles, Pablo Cruise, Steve Miller concert at the Met. What a blast from the past! I vaguely recall Steve Miller making a surprising entrance by first anonymously mingling with the crowd before jumping onto the stage. No one in the crowd recognized him.

[ Funny, . . . I can't remember who went to that concert with me. What the heck was I smoking? :) ]

Don't forget the other concerts of our era: Crosby, Stills & Nash, ELO, Hall & Oates, Neil Young, Elton John, Kiss . . . What others am I forgetting? [ No, I'm not smoking anything now. . . I'm just gettin' older and can't remember! ]

BTW, as far as clique walls tumbling down, here's my observation: At our age we realize that life is short and precious, and once we see someone from our youth, we're darn happy to know they're still here on this Earth and we don't give a crap about old clique walls.

I was at that concert too. I remember when Steve Miller was into a heavy blues guitar thing and the sky opened up in a torrential downpour. Great special effects!

Let's see ... I also saw Foghat, J. Geils, and Led Zeppelin. Tom Colbert tried to get an interview with Robert Plant for the JFK newspaper. I was going to be his ace reporting assistant. We didn't get the interview but the band manager gave us free tickets.

And don't even ask me about Kicks games. I never made it home from the last one I went to.

Sue, I'll take the extra credit and your husband must have an impressive collection. I hope he is listening through a tube amp.

Concerts: ELO, Blue Oyster Cult, Bob Seger, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Little River Band, Boston, Queen, Rush, Styx, Blackfoot, Jackson Browne. We don’t need to mention KISS again and I know there were more.

08/11/08 09:43 AM #69

Sue McKinny (Short)

Wow...my husband would be SO impressed with you Bret! Yes, he only listens with a tube amp. Now I know I can't bring him to any of the class reunions because he'll hunt you down and talk music until he's blue in the face. We are going to the Albuquerque record show in Sept. Just what we need...more records! :)
