John August Barlow, age 82, a long-time resident of Boulder City, Nevada, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020. John was born on November 12, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Clint and Hazel Barlow. He moved to Boulder City in 1942 and graduated from Boulder City High School in 1955. After studying Russian at the U.S. Army Language School at The Presidio of Monterey, California, he served three years in the U.S. Army as a Russian voice intercept operator for the U.S. Army Security Agency. He then spent the next 41 years of his life as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Boulder City from 1959 to 2000.
A strong supporter of the second amendment, John was a member of the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club and a life member of the NRA. Upon his retirement, he received the Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Postal Service for having the highest sick leave balance of over 4500 employees in Southern Nevada, and for working for over 40 years without an accident.
John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn; children, Julie (Robert) Murray and John (Pamela) Barlow; step-children, Tom (Debbie) Sullivan, Barry (Kelly) Sullivan, and Brigid (David) Joseph; grandchildren, Mitchell (Serretta) Barlow, Ashley (Kolby) Robinson, Torrey (Landon) Moyes), Melainie O'Connor, Whitney (Jeff) Cox, Aidan Murray, and Clairese Murray; step-grandchildren, Kira (Nathan) Keller, Shanna Sullivan, Kelsey (Anna) Sullivan, Michael (Karlee) NcNeill, Shane Joseph, Sara Joseph, Alan Sullivan, Bryson Sullivan, and Kailey Sullivan; 16 great-grandchildren; and 9 step-great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Hazel Barlow.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later time after restrictions from COVID-19 have been lifted. Services are pending. To Plant Memorial Trees in memory, please visit our Sympathy Store.

Our dad, John the mailman, passed away in his sleep Saturday night. If you had him as your childhood mailman, you can rest assured that everyone in heaven now knows your name and the street address where you grew up. We sure will miss him. Julie Murray

Michael Merrill (1955)
John was a great guy and also a super classmate. I have so many fond memories of him as we grew up together going to school through elemnetary, Jr. High and then BC High School. We had a fairly small high school, about 325 or so when we were both there, so everybody knew everybody. Anyway I am sure he will be missed by his family. And John - friend RIP brother - thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Mike

I called Johnnie last week, 4/30/2020 to find out what he knew about Marilyn Hall Patton Class of '56. Johnnie knew everyone practically as he delivered mail in Boulder City. He said to me "your parents lived at 664 Avenue D.'.

Woops, I hit the wrong key ! We talked about former days playing baseball. Johnnie was a good ball player and played third base. He was proficient in languages and while in the Army in Germany worked in the Intellligence Dept during survellience of the USSR. I am just aghast at losing him. My deepest sympathy to his family. He a great friend and will always be remembered by so many from Boulder City. Roy Atkin

John was a really nice guy. John and his dad and mom watched out for me on my first deer hunt in the Ruby Mountains in 1970. I was lucky to have John be our mailman for many years, he never quit delivering mail to me, even after my dog tried to take off his leg. My whole family loved you John. May your family find comfort knowing you are in Heaven with your dad and mom.

Sympathy to John's family in his passing. I'm happy that he passed quietly. I remember the 4th grade where he and I passed notes :) The teacher caught me!!! John was always a pleasant person to be around.

John was a good friend and lived accross the street from me on Ash St. In my scrapbook, I have an old newspaper article from our days on Bill McCullough's BC Intermediate baseball league that has a picture of John with his arm in a cast. He broke his arm sliding into 2nd base. What great times those were and I was lucky to have shared them with such a great guy. RIP John--....BP

I remember John Barlow as a kind and gentle person who had plenty of patience telling me about gridiron and baseball when we first arrived in Boulder City from Australia. When we moved to Cleveland and other places for 6 months where our father was working, John very strongly insisted I go to the home of the Cleveland Indians for a game. I never saw a game but was allowed to walk onto the field and have a good look around.
It was a pleasure to visit BC for the 50th class anniversary and catch up with John and Carolyn and classmates.Very sad as we age and lose our friends. RIP John Barlow. William Johnson 1955.

Several people have asked about services for my dad, so I wanted to get the word out that his funeral service will be at the Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, July 7th, at 11:20 a.m. Directly after the service, his remains will be interred at his final resting place at the cemetery.
