Do YOU belong on the BEAT? … an invitation to join an uphill battle
Bowen islanders who support the park proposal have a big advantage. They have the promotional clout of Parks Canada, Bowen Council and various privately-funded special interest groups behind them, plus ample opportunities to champion their cause at PC-sponsored meetings, as members of the Advisory Committee (appointed by Bowen Council), on local blogs and websites, in The Undercurrent, etc. We respect their views and the efficiency of their campaign. This is fair in a democracy.
In contrast, residents not in favour of the proposal, or who want answers to hard questions about its implementation and benefits, lack any centralized forum in which to air concerns or exchange information. Also lacking is a platform to challenge unfounded “red herring” suggestions by some proponents that clear-cut logging, mining and watershed degradation will result without approval of the Parks Canada proposal.
Bowen BEAT aims to fill that gap by providing a fact-based information source and comment-gathering forum, addressed to the majority of Bowen Islanders. YOU belong on the BEAT if:
1. You DISAGREE with the proposal to create a National Park on Bowen Island;
2. You are UNDECIDED about the park, but question the process, speed and tactics by which it has been thrust upon the community;
3. You NEED MORE TIME to make a decision, based on final results of multi-level government negotiations and independent environmental and socio-economic cost/benefit analyses.
We're delighted to have more feet on the BEAT …. .
However - if you are ideologically committed to the NPR, this website is not for you. Unsupported pro-Park propaganda has no place here as there is already exists an overload of pro-Park material being distributed by well-funded organizations through other media.
