Well it's July 2, 2010 and of course since our reunion was two years ago and the next one is three years off, most don't check this site at the moment. I really wander with Facebook how many will use this site. I hope everyone comes back and starts using it again as we get closer to the next reunion.
My reason for posting is simple: It's the 4th of July and to me, in my heart, the 4th of July screams Brazil! I have to tell you the older I get the more nostalgic I am. I absolutely loved growing up in Brazil and of course the highlight to any summer was the 4th of July and the City Park. I can't tell you how much money I spent over the year's shooting basketballs trying to win those teddy bears! I still think some of the fireworks were the best I have ever seen to this day.
We were fortunate growing up to have such a beautiful City Park. All the land, trees, golf course, go-cart track, baseball fields, swimming pool, tennis courts, walking bridges. What a great asset it is. There is never a visit home that I don't make time to drive through the Park. It really saddens me to read the newspaper on-line and see vandalism done to the Park in recent years.
Speaking of the City Pool, how many remember swimming in the old City Pool that the WPA built back in the 1930's. I can't tell you how many times I scrapped me knees in that concrete pool! You knew where the deep water was becasue of the fencing around the diving area.
I remember the entertainment being better and more in abundance than it appears today. That's probably due to the economy I would guess. I remember enetertainment in the bandshell starting at Noon on the 4th and going all the way up til the Fireworks at 10 o'clock and families pick-nicked in the park all afternoon and evening. It was just a festive time.
Maybe it still is all that, and I hope that it is, but I just don't get home enough to know. Those were great times though growing up!
We'll tackle the topics of economic growth, infrastructure, and job creation in Brazil some other time!
