Andrew Kosinski, 67, of Cape Elizabeth, passed away suddenly on April 28th, 2020, in his home of natural causes.
Andy was born in Poland to Witold and Leokadia Kosinski on November 30th,1952. At the age of seven, he moved from Poland to Cleveland, Ohio with his parents and his younger sister. He was enrolled in school not knowing a word of English, but he adapted quickly and happily, making friends as he had in Poland with his talkative nature and imaginative play. His family moved several times in Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio before moving to Bangor, Maine in the summer of 1968, and then settling in Brewer, Maine two years later. He attended Bangor High School for his sophomore and junior years and finished high school at Brewer High School where he graduated in 1971. He enlisted in the Navy after high school for four years and then attended University of Maine in Orono, where he graduated with a BS in Communications.
After college, Andy moved to Portland, Maine where he was hired as one of the on-air hosts at WYNZ, a job he loved with a passion and a place where he made lifelong friends. He later followed his hobby of auto mechanics to several positions at Napa Auto Parts where he worked until his retirement in 2007.
Throughout Andy's childhood, his father followed politics closely and current events were often the topic of discussion during dinnertime as Andy was growing up. By the time he was in high school, Andy had become highly interested in politics as well and was an active part of those conversations. He immersed himself in politics for the rest of his life and, for a time, was an active member of the Cape Elizabeth Democratic Committee.
In retirement, Andy enjoyed his home with his dog. He remained compassionate and generous to all he met. He loved people and good conversation. He also had a great fondness for all creatures in nature and befriended many of them that came to visit in his backyard.
Andy will be remembered for his love of all animals, his appreciation of an eclectic variety of music and films, his terrific sense of humor, his gift for talking politics, and his aversion to dead air.
Andy was predeceased by his father, Witold Kosinski, and his mother, Leokadia Kosinski. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Kosinski of South Portland, his niece Haley Vail, her husband Brian Vail, and their three young daughters of Windham, his nephew Adam Robertson of Portland, and his former wife and best friend, Lorraine Carpenter of Cape Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held once the risks of COVID-19 have passed. To honor Andy's life, donations may be made in his name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland or World Wildlife Fund.
