Diane passed away in Southport, England, in April 2012, just short of her sixtieth birthday. There is no obituary, but I will fill in a few blanks, Please feel free to share.
Diane Leeming was born in June, 1952, in Southport, England. She was the first of five children for her parents, John and Bette Leeming. The family (four kids by then) immigrated to the USA in 1962, after John Leeming got a job at Emple Knitting Mills in Brewer. Diane attended Brewer schools, including Washington Street elementary. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1971.
Diane married Charles Watters in 1972, and they settled in Eddington. He was also a graduate of Brewer High, class of 1969, I think. Diane and Charles had two daughters, Wendy and Jennifer. Diane was a great mother. They divorced in 1990 or so. Charlie died in 2017.
In 1990, Diane moved back to Southport, England, her birthplace. She had stayed in touch with an old friend, Ian Tomlinson, whom she met during a family trip to England in 1968. Diane married Ian in 1991 and became Diane Tomlinson.
Diane and Ian lived a simple and very happy life in Southport. They had many, many pets, including birds, lizards, and ferrets, Ian did odd jobs and was very handy around the house. Diane enjoyed handicrafts and developed a great circle of friends. In the nineties, Diane's younger daughter, Jennifer, then a teenager, also moved from the USA to Southport, and she still lives there.
We saw Diane when she would come back to visit us and our parents, and she always seemed to be enjoying herself. Her older daughter, Wendy, stayed in Maine, married, and has had two sons, the oldest of which is just starting at UMO this month. We enjoyed our visit to Southport in 2001, where we got to know Ian.
Diane died in 2012 of a recurrence of breast cancer, with which she was initially diagnosed in 2009 or so. She had been treated at The Linda McCartney Cancer Center in Liverpool, which is not far from Southport. Diane's ashes were spread on a memorial garden in Southport. Her husband Ian died just a few months later. He was distraught at the loss of Diane and probably was not taking his diabetes medication properly.
We remember Diane with love. Thanks again for asking about her.
I hope all is well with you. Take care,
John Leeming
