Darrell King

Millinocket and Brewer - Darrell Dean King Sr., 72, passed away surrounded by friends and family after battling an autoimmune disease and cancer on December 31, 2021. He was born March 17, 1949, the son of Robert and Ellen (Crandlemere) King.
Darrell grew up in Houlton and moved to Brewer when he was in high school. He graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1967. He then joined the Air National Guard, and later the Army Reserve, serving for seven years. While in the Guard, he began taking night courses and then later graduated from the University of Maine. Except for a few years spent at the middle school, Darrell spent his career at Brewer High School, where he immersed himself in the school community. He coached track, cross country, chess, helped out at many other activities and sporting events, and was always happy to handle "Saturday school." He particularly enjoyed chaperoning trips with the students and was able to see the world along with them on those trips. Darrell loved teaching and being a teacher and cared greatly for all his students.
Following his retirement in 2010, he served as a long term substitute at Brewer High. He then moved to Millinocket to be close to his favorite place: Baxter State Park. Darrell climbed Mt. Katahdin 84 times. He was an avid hiker and loved traveling. He was especially close to his family and loved his dog, Sam. He was very involved with his church, Zion Pentecostal Church in Mattawamkeag. Darrell was always willing to put others ahead of himself, whether he knew them or not.
