ROANOKE, Va. - Barbara Anne Chalmers DeLong, 68, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at her home in Roanoke County, Va. A native of Brewer, Barbara was born Oct. 30, 1941, a daughter of John and Gertrude Chalmers. She graduated from Brewer High School, where she was a cheerleader, and Barbara forever retained a special fondness for those years. She moved to Roanoke, Va., in 1984 and worked nearly 20 years for the law firm of Woods Rogers as a receptionist, a job she loved, until retiring in 2003 due to declining health. Barbara loved many people, especially her children, and many loved her. Bill Adams of Roanoke, Va., was her steadfast companion for 11 years. Among Barbara's favorite things were Maine lobsters, flowers, cozy fires in her fireplace, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the small tomato plant patch she tended on the porch of her apartment. Barbara found particular solace at the beach, especially Pawleys Island, S.C., where she spent hours in the sun, thrilled by sightings of pelicans and porpoises. She also found joy when glimpsing deer running through the fields. Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor and a memorable laugh that could fill a room. She enjoyed bantering with many of the attorneys at Woods Rogers when they passed by her desk. Barbara was predeceased by a son, Sean Connor, who died at age 3; her parents; and a sister, Rebecca Black. Barbara's survivors include her son, Christopher Connor of Bangor; daughter, Cynthia Freeman and her husband, John, of Alton; brothers, Ronald "Buddy" Chalmers and Jimmy Chalmers, both of Bangor; and brother-in-law, Eddie Black. Other survivors include grandchildren, Keira Barnes, Tyler Faulkner and Mindy Iwaniszek; great-grandchildren, Connor and Jordan; niece, Cathy Winston; nephew, Stevie Chalmers; as well as honorary nephew, Will Adams of Roanoke, Va. A memorial service is planned in Roanoke, Va., with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Barbara with a donation to Angels of Assisi, Roanoke, Va., at www.angelsofassisi.org or a charity of donor's choice. Oakey's Funeral Service, Roanoke, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
